Show Exploring the Possibilities of Mind and Body By David Petersen c ig Writer liter or for short is what students are studying studying studying study study- ing in the new Mind Body Connection class at by Louise Thomas a certified clinical medical assistant and instructor in the MA program is a new field of medicine dealing with the mind psycho the nervous system and the immune system immunology The Mind Body Connection class MA was established to increase the students student's awareness of existing alternative modalities to live healthier er mentally and physically and to alleviate illnesses People have the ability once they know how to take charge of their physical and mental health Thomas said Some of the modalities studied by students in this class are feed bio biofeedback biofeedback biofeedback back progressive and standard relaxation relaxation relax relax- relaxation creative im imagery gery self talk self talk and acupuncture During class time students students stu stu- students stu- stu dents will practice and apply these techniques to their lives and professional professional professional fields Thomas said that the techniques learned in this class apply to everybody in every situation not just the medical assistant Thomas said that will re reestablish reestablish reestablish re- re establish the art of medicine by using peace of mind love joy and beauty and enhance the healing process As students get to know themselves better they are more able to recognize recognize recognize nize their values and thus interact with others in a positive way Students who have taken MA regard time spent in the class worth worth- while These changes in my life will provide the freedom to do more each day with less effort said one student in a final paper with regard to the techniques learned in the class It the class has started me on a road to better health and happiness another student said in their final paper Thomas prepares lectures for this class from different mind body books Thomas also uses information information information tion she receives from annual workshops workshops workshops work work- shops at BYU Courses lectures by Continued on Page 3 Continued from Page 1 Thomas are complimented by lecture lecture lecture lec lec- lec- lec ture from guest speakers who work with One student said that there is a good balance between lectures speakers videos and class discus discus- Several students have said that this class has enhanced their learning abilities through the techniques learned in class The principles taught during the class further pointed out to me the need to take care of the body emotionally mentally and physically physically physically phys phys- to enable the brain to function properly during the learning process said one student MA is two-credit two hour class and is open to anybody There are no prerequisite requirements to worry about Next quarter MA will be taught at Redwood campus on Mondays from noon to 2 pm and one night during the week from pm to pm This class is being offered at nights due to the great demand on behalf of staff members Thomas said MA will be offered at Sandy campus next quarter also |
