Show Bungalows Arts and Crafts are on the Move Press Release The Utah Museum of Fine Arts presents an exhibition examining the Arts and Crafts in Utah The Bungalow Bungalow Bungalow Bun Bun- galow Lifestyle and the Arts and Crafts Movement in the Intermountain tain West This exhibition will examine the relationship between national and regional examples of Arts and Crafts objects and the architecture of the bungalow in the Intermountain West through the presentation of a typical typical typical cal Intermountain bungalow display display display dis dis- dis- dis play of Arts and Crafts objects interpretive interpretive interpretive inter inter- materials and photographs The consulting curator is Peter Goss Professor of Architectural History History History His His- tory Graduate School of Architecture ture University of Utah Adjunct Professor of Art History The Arts and Crafts movement began in England in the latter half of the nineteenth century Reacting against the rapid industrialization resulting in the machine production of poor quality goods William Morris Morris Morris Mor Mor- ris and others championed a return to the production of high quality handcrafted handcrafted handcrafted hand- hand crafted objects and an appreciation of artistic design America responded to this in the and early although it never completely denied the value of machine made objects American proponents of the movement embraced a more simple and informal lifestyle one that espoused simplicity and integrity in function design craftsmanship and materials for both architecture and furnishings The exhibit will bring together bungalow architecture of the period with Arts and Crafts furnishings so audiences might envision the simple and so simple lifestyle of the bungalow dweller in the early decades of this century A color catalog will accompany the exhibition with essays by Prof Peter Goss and Kenneth R.
