Show Senate 90 1989 to 91 1990 Cleova Williams Feature Editor A APPROXIMATELY 35 students have hove applied applied applied ap ap- ap- ap plied for senate position for the 1990 91 school year said Tom Sharpe Executive Executive Executive tive Vice President Among those applying are six or seven of this years year's experienced senators Senators for next year will be appointed appointed appointed ap ap- ap- ap pointed by senate selection committee within the next few weeks From Jan 3 to April 12 this year the senators rewrote Student Association Constitution Sharpe describes it as an all new constitution n that will serve students students' for many years to come With the old constitution constitution constitution tion only senators and not students had input into the amending process Sharpe said the biggest change is that students now have say in changes During the constitution writing process Senator Dan Black found a major problem wit with administration presenting the Senate a constitution that the administration had writ writ- ten He said That type of influence doesn't belong in student government Black went on to say that the the new new constitution constitution constitution tion is a sound document that effective stu stu- stu dent government can be run on in the future if student government officers dont don't side step issues when they find it convenient Black said that one of the bylaws under consideration limits the allowance the Executive Executive Executive tive Committee has to spend on student government uniforms An issue that the senate has addressed this year is an interim loan that will help new students and international students whose financial aid doesn't come through in time There will be a pool of money to draw on for short term interim loans Senators Dan Black and Jennifer Johnson were the sub committee committee committee com com- that prepared the loan for the Senate Executive Council and Development Director Peter Maughan Throughout the year the senate has worked on several issues brought to them by students One of the first changes they were able to tomake tomake tomake make was to help get the elevators in the AD building unlocked for the handicapped stu stu- stu- stu dents Others are changing Human Rights Day Dayto to Martin Luther King Day getting a microwave for the Airport Campus and helping helping helping help help- ing to get additional lighting for the campus grounds r V 4 |
