Show 1 A Reflection Of Our Lives Lives' By BV Cindy Aznoe President Carnahan faculty distinguished guests friends family and fellow students I 1 stand before you today as a representative of the traditional non student who comes to th the campus of Salt Lake Community C College lIege in search of an education Some come reluctantly out of necessity others hesitantly unsure of their ability and a few boldly with Witha a sense of resolute cert certainty that this is is where they belong Though coming from many backgrounds and with different attitudes and motives we all have this in common we have a need either financial or personal to receive the me best education we can in the shortest time possible Time is of the essence and quality is essential We want an education that will be worth the time and effort we have to expend in order to attain it it has been the answer for us Here we have been given the opportunity to expand expand expand ex ex- our sphere of knowledge with the able assistance of qualified instructors The classes were relatively small and the instructors for forthe forthe forthe the most part were accessible and knowledgeable We were given a chance t to question and receive individual answers a commodity which is lacking in most state state in institutions institutions institutions in- in of higher learning in these days of student mass production and budget cuts We have been offered encouragement to build on our prior experience and to contribute contribute contribute contri contri- bute something to to our fellow students through open class discussions something which is not feasible in classes measured by hundreds rather than by tens Many of us now realize that despite our fears we can succeed our bodies may move more slowly but with determination we can reach our go goals ls our mental processes may be more time consuming but the learning when it comes is ts deeper and more satisfying than before Our maturity has shown us that to question is part of the learning process and that only through asking questions can we fully understand the world around us When we were young knowing was enough but as we grow older we want to grasp the concepts the how and the why We are beginning to comprehend that our age and experience are assets not liabilities By By being given the gift of a more personalized education we have come to the realization that we can learn and we can achieve a level of success even in a world o obsessed with youth In a sense the college is a reflection of our lives is in the process of change just as y 1 v w c V u iu U
