Show t year Two-year colleges request help from universities I Pat Horgan Sports ports Editor WITH ITH the end of spring Y V quarter many students will find themselves transferring to year four-year universities soon It sounds quite simple to transfer transfer transfer trans trans- fer but according to the findings findings findings find find- ings discussed at a conference sponsored by the Center for Academic Advising transferring transferring transferring transfer transfer- ring to a year four-year school may be easier said than done The conference focused primarily on students transferring transferring transferring trans trans- ferring to the University of Utah but the problems discussed discussed discussed dis dis- dis- dis cussed were also issues that the states state's other year four-year universities are facing Very few articulation agreements have been worked out between between between be be- tween the states state's year two-year co col- col 1 leges Snow CEU and Dixie Dixie and and year four-year universities within the state According to the organizers organizers organizers or or- of the conference articulation articulation articulation ar- ar agreements between these two types of institutions institutions institutions in in- have not been made This has caused a delay in graduation because the classes a student takes while attending year two-year colleges are often not accepted in the students student's major department but are put into the elective class category Another major problem discussed was that many classes classes classes clas clas- ses which are offered as lower division courses at year two-year colleges are taught as upper division classes at universities This means that students must retake classes at the universities in order to receive upper division credits Among the recommendations was one to develop a common numbering system of classes in all Utah higher education institutions This would eliminate the need to retake classes Other recommendations included wider distribution of articulation guides to advisors at the year two-year college level making the articulation guide directly available to students and developing an office specifically designed to meet the needs of transfer students Larry Landward director for student planning and as assessment assessment assessment as- as at says the problems associated with transferring to a year four-year school from can be al alleviated alleviated alleviated al- al if students keep in close contact with the academic advisors at the university they plan on at at- tending By doing this students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents will choose only those classes that will transfer Another issue Landward discussed was the misleading information about associate degrees which has appeared in past yearly catalogs Prior to the 92 1991 catalog it was stated that both the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degrees would count as the first two years of a bachelors bachelor's degree therefore waiving the general education requirements of any institution institution institution tion of higher education in Utah According to Landward this is not true Its up to the individual department at the university to decide whether to waive the general education education education tion of someone with an associate associate associate as as- degree Landward said that most departments within Utah's year four-year institutions institutions institutions in in- require students to take additional general education education education tion classes at that school even if they have an associate associated d t U eg Ol ree The misleading information information information tion has been corrected on page 13 in the new catalog It now states the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees may qualify as the first two years of a Baccalaureate Baccalaureate Baccalaureate Bac Bac- degree and may be used to satisfy the general education requirements in all universities in the Utah System System System tem of Higher Education This key change in the wording wording wording word word- ing in the catalog has come r I i 1 c i j h-j js at t l i 4 t- t tf ln tit f j f J.
