I 4 Sergeant Jeff returns to after four months of military active duty in the Gulf Maria Von Yon Vimar Feature Editor j t L T AST Feb 13 we published a alist list of all servicemen deployed 5 l in connection on L with Operation Desert Storm who were either staff or students at So in this last spring issue we want to pay tribute to those men and women t f who served in Desert Storm and who are now back resuming their education or reassuming their professional duties These men arid women have gone through a lot in these last six months and r r their courage and valor can be d described here through the experience of our opt o own r Sr Sergeant Jeff member of the Military Police company company Utah Army i National Guard t fj 1 s The experiences may reflect those of many other servicemen who like J f had to leave suddenly for Saudi Arabia Araba to help li liberate rafe Kuwait from the thew w jh f dutches clutches of dictator Hussein i It was 2 am J we were given code threat c threat con Charlie n-Charlie which means imminent danger of a terrorist attack It was as raining and we had to stand o on the runway with all all our gear rounds of ammunition and nd gas masks said speaking of his MP unit arrival in Saudi Arabia We could see the headlights of approaching vehicles and had no idea if they x- x were terrorists It was a very intense experience for us said But the most frightening moment explained was when a scud missile missileS S sr r ripped the sky and thunder was heard as a US U.S. S Patriot missile intercepted it before it reached its target Nr L Speaking about the tr troops troop's ps p's morale said It was high Espe Especially ally when 1 we heard of the support of back home ji br brought home Valentines and Christmas cards from elementary school schoolchildren iii 1 children sent to the servicemen from several states For Valentines Valentine's a second grader ader 1 Alan Baerlocher from Washington wrote I 1 Dear s soldier in the Gulf l I hope you can come home soon I am very pro proud d of you I I am not happy that the war started because I do not like people getting killed 1 r. r speaks of the days in which h hed he'd return from the POW camp covered 3 with with sand feeling tired and lonely The innocent and simple thoughts such as i t those of the little boy in the letter mentioned above were a great source of support The Arabic culture is so sa different from ours it is iss a much m more r restrictive tri society A than the American It took time to learn and adjust to it t r To cope with the cultural impact of being in a foreign country with unique t customs the Army officials provided the troops with literature educating them Y about what was unacceptable That knowledge at times might save their lives Such is the instance with T T x- x morality for example Adultery is punishable by execution as is homicide homi de and ands X s ji d denial erua I 0 of f th the e I Islamic s I f. f faith alt h The MP company was in Saudi Arabia for approximately five lye months t H. H The liberation of Kuwait lasted about three weeks but the MP's mission was not x r w b 1 S.
