Show X w I 1 J Y- Y 0 tr- tr Letters to the Editor E k M J f t 4 f 1 t. t Dear Editor Your news reporters must be commended commended commended com com- mended for perseverance ance energy and devotion dedicated to your p tion However as in all newspapers you submit yourself to critiques from the readers My l particular beef is the Reviews section n. n I personally believe the writers writers writers writ writ- ers Nowell Michelle DeValmont DeValmont DeValmont De De- De- De Valmont and Bill Murray are not giving a a proper prope ins insight so we as readers can decide whether to view or attend a concert or a movie Mr seems overwhelmed by the movie Star Trek and as su such h tries to impress us with his overrun emotions Granted the sp special cial effects were nothing less than spectacular but the plot p and script and acting were all lacking in intelligence Its It's hard for me ma to believe that the sentence sentence sentence sen sen- tence It makes you realize just how advanced man can be and gives insight insight insight in in- sight to our possible future in technology justifies a good critique cri tique Ms DeValmont is quite a bit more subtle However she contradicts her- her seir and us a true true- representation representation rep rep- of the movie Its It's hard to determine ne what point she is trying to put across when she states The only good thing about ab ut the movie is its special special special cial effects And then in the next sentence says If If you are interested in seeing a movie with no plot but is extremely funny From her description description description des des- I had a hard time determining determining determining ing whether the movie was good or bad I will be most objective with Mr Murray due to the fact that I was a studio musician and engineer at RCA records for several months and as such am naturally more critical To des describe ribe a particular concert by telling of of- the girls present or equipment equipment equipment equip equip- ment used is a the late and early most touring bands were genuinely concerned with playing good music and entertaining the crowd Now it seems that the band with the most ice dry-ice smoke stage bombs props bombs props strobe lights etc is the best band Styx is one of the prime offenders Also its it's easy for a band to walk on onstage onstage onstage stage play pla a dozen songs and walk off with 25 grand in their pockets that they perform as if on the brink of death due to boredom Of ot the various bands Ive I've seen in the thelast thelast thelast last year and a half Heart Styx Boston Bos- Bos Boston Boston ton Foreigner Ted Nugent Kiss Donna Summer Neil Diamond Van Halen The Knack Doobie Brothers only Heart and Neil Diamond showed genuine concern with pleasing the audience Any Anyone one can make it sound professional professional professional if they have the right equipment equipment equipment equip equip- ment which most of these bands do So it is very easy for them to fake their way through The point Im I'm trying to make is the music critics should look past the special special special cial effects and t to the musicians and their particular talents Do they come across as show-offs show or as an integral part of the band Is the sound system properly adjusted and set up to provide provide provide pro pro- vide the maximum in acoustical acoustical- sound Is the stage clean and well organized organized organized or or- to allow the musician to perform perform perform per per- form his best These and many other questions should be asked when reviewing re re- viewing a a concert We as concert- concert goers pay 8 to 15 dollars a head and we deserve to see a well organized d professional show not a circus So its it's up to the reviewing person when writing a critique to sort through this this' BS and come ome out with an honest objective objective objective ob ob- ob- ob opinion My personal advice is when reviewing reviewing reviewing review review- ing a a movie or concert lo look k for the non Judge the show not by how you feel emotions but by what you see and examine logic Above all dont don't be afraid to be critical or non non-cn non If a show is good or orr bad tell it like it is and give YOUR rI reasons r- r I hope that the critics mentioned view this as constructive criticism rather than a personal attack Good Luck to your newspaper Sincerely yours Tomm Munro Ev Evening ning student of Dear Editor I would like to know why there are not enough smoking sections available available avail vail able in the cafeteria We have to fight for a table during lunch time The smokers non-smokers have complained that that- they have to sit in the cold to eat but what about the other side It is completely completely completely com com- empty while they sit and gripe I would appreciate some answers if there are any logical ones Michelle De DeValmont V almont ft 4 w it y Dear Editor Listen to this Isn't it interesting that on January at am a.m. in inthe inthe inthe the campus cafeteria a certain male campus police officer was seen smoking smoking smoking ing in the No uNo Smoking section of the cafeteria It just so happens that this officer and his female officer companions companions companions compan compan- ions are sitting sitting- just below the No uNo Smoking sign If they are suppose supposedly ly lythe the law and rule enforcers of this campus what are they doi doing g already violating a posted sign I think that they should pay better attention Respectfully D.
