Show G- G r. r Women's Issues Survey Conducted At ti c. c aw v i by Holly Hughes In December 1986 the Women's Issues Committee administered a survey to all women employees on the campus The purpose of the survey was to F reveal the differing attitudes of women regarding their work environment The survey results showed hiring iring and career career promotion rom as the primary f- f feel the male administration concerns Many predominantly overlooks overlooks' women and considers men for career advancements L b In an interview and response e to the survey President r ident OD Carnahan sai said he ar f knows of examples of men in upper-level upper campus who consider r J hiring only men for position openings He said I think it is a habitual way of thinking of men that hinders women in the work force rt r Carnahan basically feels sex discrimination is a thing of the past at the college despite the habitual way of thinking of men He said I cant can't think of ofa c a single man on campus who is intentionally against women t We had at the several said a old good-old-boy system college years ago Carnahan He said that promotion and hiring was based on who an applicant knew at the college not on his or her qualifications This made if difficult for both men and women to get hired or to make career advancements but he said this attitude has changed The survey results consist of statistics graphs and selected comments from f anonymous women on campus The survey mentioned a woman who felt L limited to lower division courses I continued to ask for other assignments but Im I'm told You teach that class so well I find this patronizing she stated Also reported in the survey was an incident where a male instructor told the joke of a man who goes to Sweden for a sex change operation and has half his brain removed On May 13 in response to the survey Carnahan introduced a new policy concerning sex discrimination to the Institutional Council which sets policies for This new policy would require the administration to hire qualified women over equally or overly qualified men Carnahan said there is an effort to get more women students enrolled in the college Traditionally speakers representing visited predominantly male vocational shop classes in high schools He said the college is now focusing u iF equally on both male and female students in high schools for enrollment in the 4 college j a r 1 |
