Show i i UTe AMATEUR If Hey man did you know that last week I talked to a aman aman aman man in Germany And a afew afew afew few weeks ago I tal talked ked to people in France Spain I Italy taly and Japan I It t didn't cost me a cent for long distance calls and it happens all the ti time me Something else interesting theres there's a guy that lives in Columbus Tennessee who has a sister that lives in Salt Lake City Every Wednesday they have been talking to each other for up to a hour half-hour V with out any charge Where has all this been taking on the fifth floor of the Technical Building Bu there is an amateur radio station This station constitutes the facilities of i the Amateur Radio I Association j This station isn't like the theone theone J one your friend has I If f your ham operator friend goes by i Black B I a c k Haw k T h e Engineer or orsome orsome orsome some other name he isn't a member of the Amateur Radio Club or an amateur either Those with their 23 channels dont don't even come close to the things the amateurs hams can do Hams can do all alt sorts of things Even th the newest ham can copy morse code at 5 words-a- words minute Some hams get going real fast up to 80 words a If I you know anything about morse code you know that th this is is really m ving Hams also have FM FM radio privileges as I well as AM voice radio teletype slow scan TV fast scan TV and facsimile with other modes of operation Here at Utah Tech's station we have morse code voice FM and were we're working on getting our radio teletype on the air Anyone with an r license can come and operate operate operate oper oper- ate the station Right now there are only two students a Utah Tech with licenses John Larsen is and Roger Taylor is Those numbers and letters are the call letters that have been J I a- a v a RADIO STATION STA TION assigned by the Federal Communications Commission Commission Commission Commis Commis- sion F FCC CC The call for Utah Tech's station is WA I B. B Three instructors in the Electronics Dept also have licenses Dallas Christensen who is the advisor for the club Horace Edmonds and Reed These are the only people who can operate the station without supervision There are two students in Electronics Electronics Electronics Elec Elec- who have taken the tests y to get their licenses and are waiting for forthe forthe forthe the FCC to assign the calls They are Mike Matthies and LaMar Beaves To get a license one must know a little electronic elec elec- theory and the morse code at a slow speed of 5 word a The license you would get is called a novice license This license is free and the test is given by mail Anyone over 21 years of age who holds a license higher than thana a novice can administer th this is test With th this is license and your small of knowledge le you can let get on the air either with your own radio equipment or with the equipment in Utah Tech's station Then the world is opened up You can talk to other hams like yourself in some other city state or country in in the world The radio club is as small now as it probably ever has been Only four active members The station is there and it contains about three or four thousand dollars worth of equipment All you need is a little interest and a willingness to work and you could soon be into the fascinating hobby of world communication communication communication cation and Amateur Radio I If f youre you're interested have questions or just wast vast to see the station drop in lam inthe station every Tuesday and to AM AMand AMand AMand and everyday after 1 30 PM The station is on floor five right across the hall from the supply room near Room There is a sign on the door See ya there John Larsen President of Radio Club |
