Show the history of the read head by mary E brumley in september 1926 a group of pioneer women with a realization of community needs and a vision of far reaching usefulness met at the home of mrs N G cook and organized the womans comans interstate community club the membership of which were women who lived in little unpretentious homes on both sides of the colorado utah state line the organization was there fore interstate practical and literary were its objectives corn combined with a community get to gether spirit some of these wo men resided long distances apart as far as 15 or 20 miles in a radius reaching from the vicin ity of high hill school house to the burn ucolo bucolo and plute springs the records of these pioneer communities in the would toe be the short and simple annals of the poor for the means of transportation was on horseback or wagon very few autos in this country at that time so the get to gether impulse had a tenacious pull to cause us to meet once in every two weeks to carry on but we did and as one of the charter members of this club I 1 can testify to the intrepid courage and enthusiasm of some of these members who came on horseback in all kinds of weather the 15 or 20 miles to be present at a club meeting for our places of meeting would be at the homes of the members and some times our seating accommodations might be pieced out with boxes or even nail kegs from the first we realized the advantage of our members being able to conduct a public meeting in accordance with parl ia ja rules and we determined that each member should have that privilege and training so our constitution was drawn with the proviso that the term of office would be six months until every member had her turn of presiding but in the course of time the tenure of office was changed toone year our first president was mrs pearl butt who is now a member of the rebus rota club in monticello we still hold to the rule of rotation in office and we older members are passing on the responsibility and privilege thour younger members and it is evident today as you can see how well they carry on roberts rules of order and emma foxs coxs parliamentary procedure for club women have been our authorities and we have always elected a parliamentarian we may not always have the best of procedure and keep strictly to the letter of the law but even at that the united states sen ate or house of representatives might take a lesson from us very early in our existence we the advantage of federating and as we were in interstate ter state we felt it was incumbent and also beneficial to be a member of each state federation and accordingly joined both the states for sometime we shared the distinction of interstate with another federated club in idaho and oregon but I 1 believe we are now the only interstate federated club in the U S we would like to enumerate the various projects to which we have contributed in both states but unfortunately our book cef at minutes for the first few years was accidentally burn bum ed so we have no written records to consult one colorados womans comans club fund to which we have contributed considerably is the minnie L harding loan fund that provides scholarships for worthy responsible girls who do not have the means to go ahead with their higher education but who in time will return the loan we have contrib contris buted to the penny art fund in both states in honor of one of our valued club members who was a zealous worker in former years but has now been translated to spiritual life mrs julia horry we contribute to the reforestation of one of the 39 acres near silverton known as lime creek burn of the san juan national forest and at one of our friend ly five meetings at which we were the hostess mrs childress who then was our district pres ident presented us with a certie acate signed by the proper authorities showing that this club is a participant in this project some 15 or 20 years ago we av ailed ourselves of a large numb er of chinese elms and russian olives that the colo state ag li cultural college was distributing we divided these among our members and ucolo bucolo north dale dove creek and burn beig are beautified by them we have always contributed to benevolent causes in both states and whenever there has been a quota assigned to organizations we have duly met ours either by some kind of entertainment or by monies from our regular dues or toy by our own handiwork the greater part of which has been piecing and quilting quilts and selling them our local activities have tried to meet corn co unity needs in case ol of disaster ous fires and other calamities ami ties we have had numerous local activities ath of july pic bics etc oyster suppers to enter tain our families and picnic din nets ners when s we needed to get some special work done by our men folks and we will give tu lu them good praise and say t they ey i are a responsive good nat natured ed bunch of caf men and we are re really y right proud of them in speaking of the assist assistance ce of our men folks we would give special mention to the late mr herbert redshaw who in various ways took an interest in hist picc tooth both papers our club work appearing on our programs with interesting tales from navajo land A large picture of shiprock painted by a navajo indian adorns the wall of our club room the gift of mr redshaw Ked shaw it was sometime in the when we began to have a central place of meeting this was the vacated store building at northdale Nort hdale and kindly loaned to us by my son L V shutt tout but in time he needed it for a granary and he then gave us a lease for 99 years on a plot of ground with our present little clubhouse which we have equipped with stove and kitchen conveniences dishes silver ware service and a piano our latest public achievement is a road side park in utah about a mile west of the colorado utah state line we have furnished this with 2 tables and benches and a fireplace our men kindly helped with this in clearing the underbrush and making the fireplace many tourists have availed themselves of the convenience of this roadside park we are sponsors in our immediate corn coin for the colorado travel ing library the books kept in our club room and irma shutt being librarian we have had most pleasant associations with our sister club t the he rebus rota in our in interstate te r stat e a activities c alvi t 1 e ss ard and oure we oust have halapy happy m memories e 0 r i e of our fi first m meeting e e g in convention with utah eastern district clubs held in monticello a number of years ago and in conventions held in other towns of utah eastern district dove creek civic club has been our congenial hostess in colo southwest district conven lions eions as well as being one in a sort of tacit federation with three other clubs in our ad jacent county of montezuma Mont czuma we called ourselves the frien adly five and held annual joint meetings for several years with alt each club in turn being hostess and what a pleasure and profit we received and what local talent was brough forth dramatic I 1 musical literary and what hap py fe fellowship and what good eats these meetings were discontinued on account of world war 11 II and in the meantime 3 of these clubs have disbanded iut but the W I 1 CC and the dove creek civic club still carry on among the happy memories of the joint meetings of the friendly five clubs one at syl van takes a prominent place along with musical and literary numbers numbers a dress parade featuring various epochs of feminine ideas in salye in dress and head gear ear brought merriment applause at a meeting with the cahone cabone club a beautiful flag drill was presented and led by the 1 late mrs ballenger I 1 thought maybe one of my newspaper reports would bring back memories of a meeting at the pleasant view club and so this is some of the high lights of ofa m few of the wo mans interstate community club activities but by no means covers all in our 25 years of ex istance and our sister clubs meeting with us today could also give a record of community usel usefulness ulness proving that wor comans womans rians ivic and literary clubs have a large influence for good for our purpose is to mor or note the gen eral welfare I 1 feel sure that nore more frequent get to bethe met aings would result in gener al welfare projects beneficial for our adjacent communities as well as fostering and deepen ing individual friendships the communication of ideas and pur poses promotes progress and growth and that is the great purpose in life to make sure that each tomorrow finds us farther than today and so we celebrate our anniversary and pay tribute to those of our members who have passed on julia horry mary ellen price callie bartell mattie peters and rachael ivie we are glad to have with us our two honorary members mrs conn and mrs orr |
