Show funeral services for mrs ben redd 0 by florence galbraith funeral services for mrs benjamin redd were held at the church in blanding friday afternoon at three there was a large crowd and man many beautiful floral offerings opening song by the choir my father knows 1 I invocation inac cation patriarch B D black violin solo one fleeting hour hyrum porter accompanied by mrs melvin adams on the organ geo hurst spoke of her willingness to help others and her many years spent working in the different church organizations josephine bayles sang forgotten a favorite of our mother being accompanied by her mother mrs J B harris douglas galbraith a son eon in law read two poems composed by friends also paid a glowing trib i ute to her fine qualities harvey kartchner played a saxophone solo silver threads among the gold patriarch A R lyman offered consolation and hope in the hereafter A vocal solo face to face was rendered by aaron harvey accompanied by mrs adams chas redd then spoke of inci denst showing then spoke of incidents showing aunt louie as she was intimately known bishop rogers spoke a few words of consolation also paying a warm tribute to our mother and thanked the many kind f friends who have been so faithful the closing song unanswered yet was rendered by the choir under the direction of R W mcallister benediction was by phil hurst the pall bearers were lawrence hawkins his sons ormas and phil delbert redd riley hurst and W R dodge eight grandchildren carried the flowers at the cemetery the choir sang prayer is the souls sincere desire the grave was dedicated by alma hawkins a brother of the deceased she is survived by her husband one son B frank redd five daughters mrs eva locke lincoln park mich mrs louie jordan idaho falls idaho mrs alice tackett nampa idaho mrs florence blanding andars and mrs genevieve holyoak moab 19 grandchildren and one great grandson five brothers david alma orson alfred and willard hawkins and one sister mrs emily out of town daughters attending the funeral were mrs tackett and mrs holyoak louisa hawkins redd was born in lehi utah june 12 1875 she was the youngest of five children daughter of elizabeth and thomas sunderland hawkins her mother being a practical nurse spent most of her time away from home caring for the sick the other wife aunt sarah stayed at home and cared for both families of children each family was self supporting at the age of five she moved with her family to taylor ariz in a covered wagon enduring all continued on page four FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS BEN REDD 0 continued irom page 1 the hardships that accompany such a pioneering trip sometimes they lived almost entirely on corn bread our mothers schooling began in in taylor with milton ray as teacher at a very early age she worked with the other children in the fields gleaning grain the bean fields were also gleaned by the children who could sell the beans gleaned for a little spending money she also helped prepare cai cabig make molasses the children saved the to make candy at the age of eight she learned to prepare straw braid it and make and block hats for both men and women she sold many of them she was very handy at making very fine crocheting em broidering broi brol dering knitting and especially in making very exquisite can drawn work at the age of 12 her family moved to colonia juarez mexico where she attended school tuition was paid in produce or cash about 4 per month during her school years she took a few organ lessons paying for practicing on a neighbors organ by ironing half a day for an hours practice she studied elocution and dram drams dr adrams ams alfa and took part in many plays up jy ij p sang in the choir for many years she taught school for three years and was rated as one of the best educated girls of her time she always took an active part in the church at al juarez she met and married B benjamin franklin redd may 18 1896 apostle teasdale performing the ceremony four children were I 1 born to them in mexico after which they left and came to utah settling in bluff in 1907 for six months while our father built a house he then moved the family to grayson now BI blanding anding they were among the first settlers and endured many hardships two girls were born to them here our mother was the first president of the Y L M 1 A in grayson she also taught sunday school for 26 years she was a very active worker in the relief society as class leader in the social service dept and as chairman of the burial clothes committee many times I 1 can remember word of a death coming in the night and mother spending the rest of the night working on clothes for the burial she continued in this work until about 1937 when due to ill health it was necessary to give up our mother was a great lover of flowers which was evident from the many kinds which filled her yards and windows her home for many years was d decorated ec orated with her own oil paintings and exquisite cioch crocheted eted laces she loved little children very much and has done a great deal in arz helping with her grandchildren who were always welcome at her home the last six years she suffered many h heart e a r t attacks and also a severe paralytic stroke yet thru it all she maintained her spirit of helpfulness and responsibility 12 four weeks ago she suffered wv 0 ther other severe attack from which time she kept growing weaker when the end came on dec 14 at 1110 p arl m frank theressa florence douglas aunt irene and mr dodge were at her bedside the rest of the family was out of town and unable to be there |
