Show OBITUARY by pearl walton leona jane walton nielson was born at bountiful davis canty utah daughter of charles E and jane mcketchnie walton pioneers of san juan county her early childhood was spent in woodruff ff rich county utah at the age of eight she left northern utah with her family traveling by ox team to join the historic company of colonizers who came to san juan via the famous hole in the rock arriving in april 1880 experiencing the stern rigors of pioneer life she grew to womanhood in bluff here she lived with her parents in the old fort among her happy memories were those of attending sunday school and recreational events under the giant cottonwood tree that became the center of all childhood social gatherings she attended the early schools of bluff where because of lack of teachers and facilities school was held mostly for benefits of discipline while the garnering of knowledge came by chance and hard experience and not because the teacher possessed distinctive educational qualities for teaching in the spring of 1888 leona accompanied compa nied her father to the new settlement then known as north montezuma where she cooked and made a home for her father and a brother this brought her the distinction of being the first woman to live in monticello on november 30 1892 she married francis nielson in the logan temple he died 20 years ago in 1918 she moved from bluff to blanding where she has sines since made her home all her life she was active in church affairs being for many years an active worker in the national relief society and the young mutual improvement association she always maintained the highest ideals and performed with und unceasing easing diligence whatever tasks became her lot she loved to gather her friends about her and for many years she opened her home to the visiting elders of the church and to auxiliary organization officers I 1 surviving her are two sons floyd W and josephl joseph L nielson of blanding three daughters mrs henry L ashton of salt lake mrs val of murray and mrs reed wilson of vernal a brother charles E walton of monticello 21 grandchildren grandc hidren and two great grandchildren |
