Show A VIEW OF THE FOUR CORNERS by anna prince redd editors note the following story came to us last week but due to lack of space had to be carried over it is an interesting account of a worthwhile trip taken by one of our correspondents what was planned as a preliminary setting up exercise sort of a test flight in anticipation of my proposed trip to the famous hole in the rock with the caravan of cf san juan descendants of the pioneers who made the original historic expedition turned out to be an unforgettable experience of its own not havling been on a horse in 15 years I 1 was properly dubious about being able to make even a short trip with any degree of ablo aplomb mb my family was doubly dubious about my even attempting such a thing all right to go as far as cars could go etc and more et ceteras but horseback oh no well ive a sort of homemade philosophy will to do a thing get started the next thing you know its accomplished just get started the thing with enthusiasm or without it with or without encouragement no matter tackle it if you think youre right and with determination all the it t cant be done fans will be put to rout in the present situation I 1 knew that if I 1 could make the grade on a short trip I 1 could probably turn in in a creditable performance on a long one inspire in spite of my 16 ounces to the pound build and make it I 1 did I 1 outride my slim daughter and her willowy friend and my son 3 i best girl and best of all I 1 earned my sons admiration when he told me I 1 was a horsewoman id have gone down twice as steep a trail as the one that winds down dixon gulch what we saw on that two day trip is too much for my inadequate vocabulary to express I 1 believe that nowhere in the world could one go to see more ingres sive grandeur more breathless beauty than the view of the four Corn corners erss ip from the magnificent height he i of blae mountain ive seen grand canyon bryce zions canyon the yellowstone in fact mush much of americas wonderland and it all fades into insignificance before the expanse of blue misted peaks and ocean wide canyons of the four corners area if roads ever come to san juan well have the world in our lap I 1 cant write d descriptive prose that will even faintly convey my impressions to you A poem would be more adequate but im too close to it as yet even for that just have to see it f for or yourself we followed the road up blue mountain to the saddle and slid down a steep trail into a virgin forest of pine and quaking aspens ashens to a cabin by a spring there we parked our pack and saddle horses and our aches and pains for the night the next morning we followed the train back of the blues to camp jackson and on around the south end of the mountain to the head of dixon gulch from which vantage point we viewed the panorama spread out below us and stretching into unbelievable distances in all directions even to the hole in i the nt rock her country itself the close up can hardly be expected to furnish an added thrill our party consisted of miss barbara margetts salt lake city miss nedra larsen of provo shirlee and jim redd mark goodmansen joined us at monticello and assisted jim with camp and pack he is a typical western figure his courtesy and consideration equal his horse wrangling and camp cooking and hard to beat we taught fred rollers kellers blue mountain saga to barbara and nedra mark already knew most of it and the way we sang it that was the finishing touch that made them san juan addicts for life miss larsen and shirley redd leave provo for washington D C on september 11 miss redd gad ing there to take a government position miss larsen is vacationing and will return to her present position with cannon ashton motor oco ico in provo miss margetts has returned to her stenographic desk in the state capitol building and jim to his classes at He business college in salt lake |
