Show IN OF SAFETY one of the manufacturers of automobiles proposes that the government expend in buying up and scrap ping old automobiles at first glance the suggestion appears selfish wasteful and extravagant but is it certainly the suggestion seems beems to be as fundamentally sound as the policy of paying farmers not to raise crops plow under cotton destroy young pigs etc the elimination of one million of the poorest cars from our highways would be in the interest of safety and efficiency fici ency and since e the money they represent would be paid to present owners it would enable them to drive better cars so would benefit this class of owners the scrapping and elimination of a million cars now in use would call for the production of approximately one million new cars end since approximately one seventh of our population is supported by the automobile industry it would spread employment and purchasing power among this vast army of workers and sales people and probably materially increase this number to be benefited of course it would be a boon to the owners and operators of factories and since the government is haying having to spend billions for relief anyhow why should not the automobile elimination i experiment le be tried better transportation for the masses would also speed up many other lines of business and increase national income |
