Show National Sons of Utah Pioneers Re -Elect Leader, Mr. Sorensen Horace A. Sorensen, was re-elected for the third term as president presi-dent of the National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers, at the Logan annual encampment. Named as other officers were C. J. Christensen, first vice president; pres-ident; Ned Winder, second vice president; Karl B. Hale, third vice president; and Milton V. Backman, fourth vice president. Retiring officers included: Dr. Joel E. Ricks, Dr. Jay B Hunt and Dr. A. Lavell Smith. Saturday evening the group enacted the march of the Mormon Battalion, which was recruited in Iowa in 1846 and marched from Council Bluffs to the Pacific Coast, the longest march in the United States military history. Members of the SUP in blue uniforms, accompanied by ladies in pioneer dress, marched up and down main street as drums blared and flags waved. The highlight of the evening program was the president's banquet ban-quet held at the Union Building, Utah State Agricultural College, the encampment headquarters. The ladies enjoyed a program at the Institute of Religion. David O McKay, president of the church, was special speaker at the public devotional service in the Logan Tabernacle Sunday. The program also featured special musical numbers. Mr. Sorensen who has been instrumental in promoting and obtaining ob-taining the fabulous collection of pioneer relics, was also confirmed as the managing director of Pioneer Village, 2998 Connor St. The village comprises five and one half acres of restored pioneer homes, shops and art of historical pioneer days of Utah. |
