Richard Palmer, five new personalities join the faculty at Westminster College as the term opens Sept. 12. They include Harold W. Payne who comes to the school from the University of Southern California where he received a master of music degree in August. He received his B.A. degree from the Hastings College, Hastings, Neb. Here he toured as a soloist with the Hastings College concert hour and gave performance of the Beethoven Concerto on a program at the University of Southern California. Cal-ifornia. At Westminster he will instruct in organ, piano and theory. the-ory. Charles Sheldon Thompson, a native of Los Angeles, graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. degree in mineralogy. He will teach in the departments of geology and geography at Westminster. West-minster. Mr. Thompson attended Chaffey College, Ontario. Cal., and served in the merchant marine for two years. During the past summer he has been completing his master's degree in minerology at the University of Utah. Dr. Miriam Stokes James, who will teach in the biology department, depart-ment, received her A.B. degree from Mt. Holyoke Women's College Col-lege in Massachusetts. She attended attend-ed the University of California where she wras awarded her master mas-ter and Ph.D. degrees. She has taught in the University of California zoology department and also at Mt. Holyoke. DR. J. RICHARD PALMER Dr. J. Peter Bercovitz, who is assistant professor in Bible philosophy philos-ophy and religion, received his A.B. degree from Occidental College Col-lege and a B.D. degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary. He did graduate work at the University Uni-versity of Edinburgh, New College, Col-lege, with a Ph.D. degree conferred con-ferred in 1952. Prior to coming to Westminster le was a member of the faculty :f the political science department f the school of business and pubic pub-ic administration, University of Missouri. Alvin R. Mercer, who joins the faculty as coach, attended high school of Canon City, Colo., and received his A.B. at Western State College, and later attended Washington Wash-ington State, University of Utah,-and Utah,-and San Jose State. He received honors in football, basketball, baseball base-ball and track. Prior to joining the staff at Westminster he coached at Canon City high school, Cyprus high, and Palo Alto, Calif. Mercer has been recreation director di-rector in several areas. Leonard A. Clark, graduate of Westminster, and has returned to his alma mater as director of admissions. ad-missions. Clark ,well known and a former Sugar House businessman, attended attend-ed Simpson College, Indianola, la., and graduated with a B.S. degree in mathematics. He is at present working on his' master's degree at the University of Utah. He is a charter member of the Sugar House Kiwanis club and is active in Boy Scout and P-TA work. |
