APOSTLE Dr. Adam Samuel Bennion, a Sugar House resident, was named last Monday as the newest member mem-ber of the Council of Twelve Aposltes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Bennion is affectionately known among his personal friends as "AD" and is prominently known as an educator, business executive, public speaker and church man. At the time of his call to be one of the LDS general authorities, he was a member of the Deseret Sunday Sun-day School Union general board, a position which he has held for 38 years. He was born Dec. 2, 1886, in Tay-losville, Tay-losville, Slt Lake County, to Joseph Jo-seph and Mary Ann Sharp Bennion. 7 le married Minerva Young, DK. ADAM S. BENNION He's new I.DS apostle. daughter of Brig. Gen. Richard W. Ycung (a grandson of Brigham Young) on Sept. 14, 1911, in the Sait Lake temple. Dr. Bennion taught at Granite high school in 1912-13 and then served four years as principal of Granite high. In 1917-19 he was assistant professor pro-fessor of English at the University of Utah, following which he became be-came superintendent of LDS schools and seminaries until 1928. During the summers from 1922-27 he was professor of education at Brigham Young university summer school. In 1928 he became director of personnel of the Utah Power and Light Co., then assistant to the president in 1934, and was named vice president in July, 1945, which position he currently holds. He has been active in civic affairs, af-fairs, including Red Cross, community com-munity chest, Utah state symphony organization and is a "ormer mem- I Dcr oi tne university oi uian Doara : of regents. He is presently a member of the Salt Lake City chamber of commerce, com-merce, Rotary club, Country club and is a president of the Salt Lake Oratorio society, which sponsors the annual community performance perform-ance of "The Messiah." Elder Bennion has also been serving as chairman of the Utah public school survey commission. Members of his family residing in this city are Mrs. Wallace Rogers, Edmund and Richard. His son, Adam, lives in Los Angeles and another daughter, Mrs. Ralph Stohl, resides in Washington, D. C. |
