Show S. H. to Have New Parking Lot; Lighting Being Prepared Sixth Public Parking Lot Offered Community; "Whiteway" Lighting System Readied Several community improvements including a parking lot and street lighting were outlined at least Tuesday's Sugar House Chamber of Commerce meeting by Ray D. Free, president. Mr. Free announced that additional drinking fountains for the business busi-ness district, long a project of the chamber, had now been realized real-ized with the installation of two fountains last week. New Parking Lot While downtown Salt Lake is fighting an almost insurmountable insurmount-able parking problem it was announced that Sugar House is now preparing its sixth public parking lot which will run from McClelland Mc-Clelland St. to 10th East in back of the J. C Penney store and other businesses along that part of 21st South. The lot, which has not yet been surfaced for parking, is being offered for community use by Willard Richards, Jr., president of the Granite Furniture Company. Cooperation of the city is being be-ing asked in grading and surfacing sur-facing the lot, Mr. Free said. In addition, several business men have offered their services in further preparation of the lot for parking. It is estimated that more than 60 cars may be parked park-ed conveniently in the lot whet it is completed. Present Lots Named Present centrally - located parking lots are at these locations: loca-tions: (1) at the South East Furniture Company; (2) in the rear of Success Market; (3) on Market square; (4) on the east side of 11th East at about 20th . South; and (5) on the west side of 11th East, directly across from No. 4. Lamp locations Marked A. L. Leick, representative of ! the Utah Power & Light Co., I announced to chamber members mem-bers that surveying for the new j "whiteway" lighting system has been completed. Marks have been placed on curbing in 1he business district to indicate location lo-cation of the new metal poles and standards which will soon replace the old wooden ones. Mr. Leick said that most of the material and equipment necessary neces-sary to start the new lighting system is now on hand, but the brackets are still siow in coming. com-ing. The power company is all ready to start construction as soon as the scarce parts arrive, Mr. Leick said. When completed, the new lighting system will give Sugar House the most up-to-date street lighting in the intermountain west. The illumination will be much more effective in eliminating eliminat-ing traffic accidents and in discouraging dis-couraging thievery and other petty crimes in the business district. |
