Show BPW Takes Action on Plaza i The Plaza, widely knowr landmark in the center of Sugai House and on Highway 40, wat singled out this week by the local lo-cal Business and Professional Women's club as being an eyesore eye-sore 'instead of an attractive monument for which purpose it was .built. Not content with just a complaint, the ladies took actioii by appointing Miss Thel-ma Thel-ma Garff, chairman of the public pub-lic affairs committee, and Mrs. John 'C. Barnes. program chairman, chair-man, 'as a committee of two to circulate a petition and then present it to the Salt Lake City comjnission. Thursday morning the petition, peti-tion, : with about 100 Sugar House business men's signatures on it.,- went before the commission commis-sion for action. Miss Garff announced an-nounced that the commissioners seemed favorable to the plan and promised early action. The petition drawn up by the BPW of Sugar House, with its seven recoiTvmendations, is printed below; PETITION TO 7THE HONORABLE BQARD OF CITY COMMISSIONERS, COMMIS-SIONERS, CITY AND COUNTY BUILDING, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH. In, pursuance with the plans of cleaning up and beautifying our city for this Centennial Year, We, the undersigned, property owners and merchants mer-chants of Sugar House, hereby here-by petition your body for as- -sistance in beautification of our Plaza and Monument at - 21st South- and Eleventh East Streets. We ask that you make or cause to be made the following follow-ing specific improvements: FIRST, 'that the commercial sign and clock (which is maintained ' by a local coal company-and advertising their firm and ' product) be removed. re-moved. . SECOND, that the trash hamper," sand box, drinking fountain, traffic signs,- and - the seating bench of the Salt Lake City: Lines, be removed; that all buses shall be prohibited pro-hibited from loading or unloading un-loading passengers by the Flaza. THIRD, tnat the concrete sidewalk surrounding said Plaza be removed so as to permit the planting of lawn and appropriate flowers and " shrubbery thereon-; that the curb be repaired and a guard rail installed to protect the planting. FOURTH .that your body shall remove Or cause to be removed the state highway signs placed thereon. i FIFTH, that the utility pole standing directly at the eas( end of the Plaza be removed. SIXTH, that all guy wires connecting to the main shaft of the Monument be removed, and. SEVENTH, that the Parks Department shall henceforth maintain or permit others to maintain this Plaza in such a manner that it will enhance the beauty of said Monument. |
