Show Police Install Parallel Parking in S.H. "Traffic conditions in Sugar House have been improved 100 per cent," stated Lt. Charles J. Larson, local police chief, in ' commenting on the new 20-foot parallel parking stalls which were painted this week along the west side of 11th East from '21st South to Wilmington, and the north side of 21st South from 10th to 11th East. "And what's more," the lieutenant added," the businessmen are 100 per cent behind the change." Hazardous Condition Angle parking for years has created a hazardous condition on both 21st South and 11th East in Sugar House, Lt. Larson stated. Several times local police po-lice officials have attempted to change the parking regulations to parallel parking without much success. This time, however, how-ever, businessmen have heartily heart-ily approved the action. By getting the automobiles in next to the gutters, traffic moves quickly and without interference interfer-ence along both thoroughfares. Lt. Larson explained that the biggest objection to making the change previously was because the merchants believed that the change from angle parking to parallel would result in the loss of much valuable parking space. However, results have proven otherwise, he said. By painting in parallel parking stalls along 21st South between 10th and 11th East and by eliminating "unnecessary" red zones, police officials reported that space for one additional car was gained Along 11th East only three car parking spaces were lost. Now Handles 2 Lanes "As a result of the change," Lt. Larson said, "we can now carry two lines of traffic on 21st South something we haven't leen able to do in years." The local chief added that the same is true of the traffic along 11th East. For people who are a bit leery about their parallel parking, park-ing, Lt. Larson stated that the local police are prepared to offer of-fer courteous and efficient on-the-spot instruction. "Once people get used to parallel parking, park-ing, they'll prefer it to any other," oth-er," he said. Only angle parking area left in downtown will be on the south side of 21st South between McClelland St. and 11th East. Painting of the parallel parking park-ing stalls along the two streets was done early Tuesday and Wednesday , mornings. It was , done under the direction of F. C. Gilbert of the police department paint crew. Lt. Larson and Det. Joe Banks were on "hand from the local police staff. |
