Simar House Post Office Notes Tenth Birthday The 10th anniversary of the dedication of the Sugar House Post Office station was marked on Thursday, Nov. 16, 1950, with the presentation of a floral offering by the Sugar House Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce. , Paul L. Pehrson, chamber president, awarded a lovely bouquet to William F. Walker, superintendent of the substation, on Thurs, day afternoon. , . ! At dedication services 10 years ago, Nov. 16, 1940, an open house was held from 1 to 5 p.m., showing a demonstration of mall routing and an exhibition of the highlights of the new Post Offica building. Evening services at 7 p.m. featured music by the Sail Lake City Post Office band, remarks on the history of Sugas House by Nephi J. Hansen and A. C- Smoot, an address on "Sugar "Su-gar House Looks to the Future," and various musical selections. Dancing followed the evening program. According to Cecil A. Crock-well, Crock-well, superintendent of the station sta-tion at the time of its dedication, dedica-tion, there were 1 several Sugar House civic leaders who played important import-ant roles in getting get-ting a post office of-fice station for Sugar House. Perhaps most i n s t r umental was Marvin G. Ashton, now do- ceased, who Mr. Crockwell was formerly general manager and president of the Sugar House Lumber and Hardware Company. Long identified with community improvements, im-provements, Mr. Ashton worked persistently to get a post office in Sugar House. Others who helped, Mr, Crockwell said were: George Dixon of the Hyland Lumber. Co., A. C- Smoot of the Smoot Investment Co., H. A. Sorensen of the South East Furniture Co., and Willard Richards of the Granite Furniture Co. Committee for the dedication celebration in 1940 was headed by Wendell J. Ashton, son ot M. O. Ashton. He was assisted by Allen Seegmiller, Paul Morris, Mor-ris, Ray D. Free and H. F. Harding. Committee associates were: L. Roland Bain, Jed Li. Ashton, and R. Louise Hog-gan. Hog-gan. ' |
