Show qRoii Hendricks Named Chairman of S. HL May Style Show Dr. Bennion Also Speaks on Need For Southeast High School at Prison Site Ron. L. Hendricks, 1989 So. 16th East, manager of the Southeast South-east Shoe Store, was named chairman of the annual Sugar House Style Show at a chamber of commerce membership meeting at Beau, Brummel Restaurant. The great spring event, now in its 4th year, is slated for some time in May, Mr. Hendricks said. Mir. Hendricks appointment came at a general business meeting meet-ing of the chamber during which the members heard from Dr. M. Lynn Bennion of the Salt Lake City schools, and from Henry W. Richards, who will direct a community celebration in April. Mr. Hendricks presented names of two aides for the Style Show committee wlhich were approved by chamber vote. They were M.L. "Bud" Brain and Loyal Atkinson. Bennion on School A high school for the southeast area was outlined by Dr. Bennion, superintendent of schools, whose theme was that the northeast corner of the old prison site in Sugar House is the logical space for the school, Dr. Bennion cited the need for a large area for the school because it would be made a focal point of big athletic contests, night school work, and other adult education and cultural pursuits. Salt Lake's high school population will probably jump from 4,410 as of Nov. 1949 to 11,160 in 1963-64, according to Dr. Bennion. The southeast section is, of course, the fastest growing area in Salt Lake, and therefore the need for a new high school here is a great one, he said. Corner Location It is proposed by the city school board that the school be located lo-cated on 17th East and 21st South, but back several hundred yards from the latter street to elimate traffic noise and give a more attractive setting. He said that the high school would fit in well with the state park being planned for the prison site, and the whole thing would be an asset to the community. When asked by one of the chamber members about locating the school on the southwest portion of the prison site instead of the northeast, Dr. Bennion said that the latter is a better site, but that the board is "open minded". |
