Show 1 THE TELEPHONE STRIKE 1 I OUR POSITION AND THE PUBLIC INTEREST i We didn't want a telephone strike and we regret its continn- mj ance, with the inconveniences the public is suffering. I We have a responsibility to you, the public, to provide the p I best service we can at the lowest rates consistent Mith fair treat- I ment of employees and the investors who have put their savings in ? 1 our business. I Consequently it was our responsibility to say to the Union: "Your demands are beyond all reason complying with them would make necessary prohibitive rates for telephone service. This I would be bad not only for telephone users and investors, but in k I the long run for telephone employees as well." I I We want telephone wages to be fair, and all of our comparative p 1 studies have indicated that they are fair actually on the high side j in the communities in which we serve. i The Union does not agree that present Mages are good. Wc I are unable to get together, and so the company suggests, and had ig 1 suggested before the strike, that the wage issues be submitted to jfe 1 arbitration by a board of impartial citizens residing in the states in I which the company operates. p 1 ARBITRATION OF THE WAGE ISSUES WOULD 1 J ' BE FAIR TO ALL f 1 When all interested parties are considered, and the public has 'i I a very definite interest in the dispute, it certainly seems that an of- I fer of arbitration is a fair offer. 1 Arbitration is simply a means of letting an impartial person or I I group of persons settle a dispute after reviewing the facts and giv- t I ing full consideration to both sides. The arbitrator acts as a judge !? I or umpire. I Agreement on arbitration and going back to work while the jt I board is deliberating, would mean that everyone would be benefit- g I ed. The public would get service, employees would get back on the 1 pay roll, and the company could proceed with its large construction I program to give its customers the kind of service they Mailt. ji I Your continuing friendly understanding and cooperation dur- ing this unhappy situation are greatly appreciated. 1 THE MOUNTAIN STATES TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH CO.
