Show ENTERTAINMENT MOVIES RADIO HOUSEHOLD HINTS Out of the Slush Pump By Ottum et al ' Let's face it: We were flat on our backs last week. And we're not going to hand out lame excuses such as picking up the paper and discovering for the first s' - . & W I , v - m i l , , ' P ' i ' , h - I ; ; ' j time the column was missing. We knew it was missing all along. We didn't write the thing, that's why. Hence, if we've caused you or Woody Hersh any undue strife we apologize. During the week we noted with satisfaction a number of people had been reading the column and called toask"wha' hoppen" when it didn't appear. We also noted with great relish re-lish our review of Jazzbo apparently ap-parently has done some good. So without further guff, let's catch the Hersh show, "Campus Varieties," station KUTA. To those of you who. like to take your 'column reading in short doses, read no further. .In a nutshell ,we like Woody's chow; think for the most part it's the best in town. Any analysis we make from here oh out-will stem from that basic agreement GENERAL FINDINGS By and large, this show is mighty good. It moves along fast and Brother Hersh has-an 'excellent 'ex-cellent -sense Of 'timing: He plays enough music for the time he is allotted, too. His choice of music mu-sic is good; with emphasis on bounce and sentiment. His approach ap-proach 'is' 'friendly; personality pleasant. BAD POINTS ' We've never seen Woody Hersh' iii the flesh, but from the sound of his voice we'd prefer it that way. Of course, we can't hold the sound of his voice against him perhaps he should spend- a 1-ttle more time shouting into rain barrels until .he picks up a little rnore growl. But let's not get picayunish. Woody's commendable careful program planning, seems at times to be carried to the extreme ex-treme and the show loses a lot of spontaneity. He could learn a thing or two from Jazzoo or from at KMUR (doesn't that guy ever say his name? Mitzi's partner, that is). Prom our particular point of view, lack of good jazz on the program is a drawback. The show could do well with a plentiful supply of Louis Armstrong, Arm-strong, Pee Wee Russell, Hob Crosby, old Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden biscuits. To our mind, a disc show without these great jazz artists is inexcusable. in-excusable. GOOD POINTS Check GENERAL FINDINGS for our lead on this discussion. The idea of having campus guest stars and commentators is fine. Length of the show-"the shortest short-est twenty-five minutes in radio" ra-dio" is shrewd radio nb matter how you look at it. Makes the customers want more and more. The simple fact that Prof. Hersh doesn't hack away at the current crop of bebop and gush won him a place in our hearts right off. If the stuff is clever, bouncy and-or well put together, he'll play it. If it lacks same, he doesn't. You get little of the throat-cramming tactics so common to most shows on "Campus Va rieties." Bully! Woody's happy mixture of listenabie music and pleasant commercials Is a veritable oasis. Witness the show's garnering a first-rate national advertising award for 1948. SUMMARY Woody, old man, you've got a good show there . . . don't louse it up! Don't hide your talents under the well-known bushel basket. You have a good radio personality . . . let's have some more of it! Your listeners would welcome your opinions and asides from time to time. Tell us whaf you especially like and why. Give us a little background on that 1939-1946 taste in music of yours. j No hard feelings about the voice, old man. With us its the face and the general disposition . . . but we're working on 'em! Why don't you give that rain-barrel rain-barrel routine a try? A little more growl would do a lot. Next week: Anybody's guess mavbe Mitzi's friend on I KMUR. You might say Patricia Hall legged her way into the movies. A former commercial model and beauty contest winner, she's been signed by Universal-International Studio, will play bit parts in "Ma (and Pa Kettle" and "The Life of Riley" and have her first featured role in Donald O'Conner's new movie, "Yes, Sir, That's My Baby." |
