Show Opinion - - trend of business pass us by to farther-out shopping centers. I I recommend that the officials of our Sugar House Chamber -I of Commerce make a thorough investigation 'into this matter, mat-ter, solicit the opinions and cooperation of local business men. and continue to work on this problem until a final solution solu-tion is reached. TRAFFIC Our next perplexing problem is that of traffic. Twenty-j Twenty-j first South, or our Main Street in Sugar House, is also U. S. ! Highway -50. This is the main coast to coast highway, and ! the main east and west state artery Highland Drive, one of the busiest boulevards in the city, crosses Twenty-first South at our central corner. Actual count has shown that more cars pass this intersection than any other one in the city. It has long been known as a traffic bottleneck. At any busy time, one has only to stand at this intersection long enough for a change of lights to see traffic line-up for a block each way waiting for the "go" signal. Twenty-first South should be widened to a six-lane street from Eleventh East to Wasatch Wa-satch Boulevard. The State Road Commission has this project proj-ect blue printed and is willing to go ahead with the actual' construction. They need only one thing public demand. Sugar House must make its needs known and continue to work for its objectives or we never will receive anything from the city or state. Here again I recommend that our Chamber of Commerce pursue a definite course. STREET LIGHTING Street lighting is another essential. Aside from signs and other private lights, Sugar House is the darkest part of Salt Ltike. This situation is a hlot on our community and a hazard to public safety. We need a fine ornamental white-way white-way system on both sides of 21st South Street from 9th East to 15th East, and on 11th East Street and Highland Drive from Hollywood Ave. to Wilmington Ave. This necessity ne-cessity was recognized and plans were developed several years ago. but the war came on so the matter was dropped. Recently a feeble effort was put forth to revive interest in the project, but due to a lack of spirit and leadership the idea is apparently tabled. Here again I recommend that our Chamber of Commerce take the initiative and carry through on this project. PCBLIC EYE-SORES Why do we have to tolerate the presence of these unsightly un-sightly utility poles on our busy thoroughfares? This same condiiton has existed for 50 years. Why do we permit the Plaza to become a common dumping ground? Why do we. permit our beautiful monument to be degraded by the disgraceful dis-graceful use of the Plaza? At present there are 21 unsightly objects on this Plaza, ranging from garbage containers to a commercial sign. Even the monument itself is being conveniently con-veniently used as a guy-wire post. This Plaza, a place intended in-tended for beauty, and graced by a $30,000 pioneer monument monu-ment .has become an eye-sore to the community. Where is otir civic pride? Here again is an opportunity for our Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce to get busy. MORE COLLECTIVE EFFORT The merchants of Sugar House are handling a fine quality of merchandise and at good values. We have some of the finest stores and smartest shops in the state. Sugar House' has much to offer. Many etablishment are remodeling remodel-ing and planning expansion. With the war over, and building build-ing conditions improving, we will see a face-lftng here never before experienced. All of this is through individual effort. We need more community planning and collective effort. We need to do more things collectively that will bring benefit bene-fit to Sugar House as a whole.,;. Our Chamber of Commerce has grown to a membership well past 100 business establishments, represented by a fine group of men, but in many cases , lacking in enthusiasm and civic spirit. i Recently the Chamber of Cflrrimerce put on a campiagri to collect $15,000 for promotional purposes. The response was good, although just what the money was to be spent for has never been made public. Perhaps there are many who would like to contribute if they were assured that there was a definite program of expenditure set up. What better use could these funds be put to than to help in bringing about improvements such as are brought to your attention in this ' article.' |
