Goalen, head of the local branch of the Salt Lake City Fire Department, De-partment, has written the second in the series of "Your Community" Commu-nity" articles. The captain issues is-sues a timely word of warning that should be read by every citizen who would like to protect pro-tect his home, office or neighborhood neigh-borhood from fire.) You have read many times about how flamable those pretty green' Christmas tree are. How you must keep lighted candles and flame of all kinds away from them. Well how about that Christmas tree that has served its purpose and is now all dried out and does not look so nice any more? Have you taken it out of the house yet? If so. have you put it in a safe place where it will not .cause your house, your garage or any of your sheds or fences to burn down in case it should catch on fire? People should remember that when these Xmas trees dry out they burn even faster than when they were covered with gasoline. It is not safe to let children have them unless you know ex-, actly what they are going to do with them. They are not a safe plaything. Be safe and set them out. with the garbage and the garbage man will haul them down to the Cjty dump where they will be disposed of safely. Although the husbands of the community will probably not look on the idea with favor, it is not too early to do a little spring house cleaning of a. certain cer-tain kind. During the cold months trash and old papers often of-ten are allowed to. aocumulate in our basements and attics. This creates a definite fire hazard and one to which many dangerous dan-gerous and costly fires have been traced. It may be a little soon for housewives to begin their annual spring cleaning and scrubbing, but it certainly is time to get rid of any materials that may burn down our houses or places of business. Remove all old paper and boxes that are being stored. This will not only make the homes and places of business safer, but it will also improve their appearance. ap-pearance. We in the fire department de-partment are trying hard to make our city safer and we feel that, it is our duty to call this m-mer to public attention. I |
