Phone 6-0743 OPENING OF THE WEST In 1847 when those hardy souls, men, women and children, child-ren, followed the head of their Church, Brigham Young, over the. trackless, although not desert, plains and mountains to the unknown West, they brought with them the pioneer stay-with-it spirit that brought to the western portion of these United States the .wonderful magic of,' irrigation. They settled in what was then a veritable desert, but which by their efforts, was turned into one of the richest agricultural and mining districts of the great commonwealth. They brought with them their religious spirit which has in all ages overcome the difficulties pf the world, they combined that spirit with hardihood of the pioneer to such an extent that today Utah is a state, whose reputation and example, has transformed the western country, from one where the wolf and the coyote reigned supreme to a land that is truly flowing flow-ing with milk and honey.
