Molitor, chair-man of the UF downtown business division. Molitor has engaged the com-plimentary services of 380 com-petent business men, who are on loan from their respective com panies,-- to solicit contributions from 3700 Salt Lake City business establishments. "The generous support of the wage-earne- rs in making a day's pay contribution will take care of their responsi-bility for all health, welfare and character-buildin- g agencies in the community for the whole year," said John H. Klas, general cam-paign chairman. Captains tor the business district solicitation teams who are attempt-ing to reach'a 1958 campaign goal of $851,000 include: John E. Ed-wards from Prudential Insurance Co. of America; W. E. "Ted" Gar-jbet- t, from Burroughs Corporation; Bevan W. Leonard, Continental Agency Co.;; Wallace R. Woodbury Woodbury, Corporation; Gordon E. Noble, American Casualty Co.;; Patton N. Leaver and LeGrande This means that there is an ur-gent need to continue to build civil defense readiness and capability into existing governments at all levels. ' In this respect, the 1957 theme j of National Civil Defense Week-Govern- ment in Emergency is! most appropriate. Sept. 15 thru 21 Set as Civil Defense Week The White House has designated I " September 15-2-1 as the second an-nual National Civil Defense Week. In last year's observance, every State and Territory participated. Federal departments. State and municipal governments took the opportunity to show their state of civil defense readiness. The 1957 observance, with the theme "Government in Emergen-cies a chance for self - evaluation, a period of determining just how much progress has been made in a year's time in their prepared-ness for disaster. In the past 12 months, there have been great advancements in wea-pons development. It is no secret that an all-o- ut attack on the United States would: destroy not only a great number of cities, but also inflict heavy damage on rural areas, and spread radioactive fall-out to contaminate thousands of square miles While 'this is a most gruesome picture, it is' not complete unless one were to consider the natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes and tornadoes which occur almost daily to tax fhe resources of gov-ernment. Each year about 400 small and large disasters are re-ported in the United State. Man-mad- e disasters and natur-al disasters are fundamentally al-ike. And basically, they can best bet met by strengthening the or-ganizations we now have on hand.
