The Bell Telephone System has entered into a contract with War-ner Brothers to have produced a second series of four one-ho- ur science color films for use on television according to H. K. Rich-mond, District Manager, of the Mountain States Telephone Co. "Our Mr. Sun" the initial pict-ure of the first series of four science programs to be televised was shown in November 1956. Since that time over 100,000 people in Utah have seen the film in color during private show- - ings in schools, churches, clubs, etc. 51,000 in Salt Lake City have enjoyed it. The second film of the Bell System science series was "Hemo The Magnificent," a story of blood and the circulatory sys-tem. This has been equally , as popular as the scientific story on the sun. Pvt. Richard A. Barr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper L. Barr Sr., 2302 Lake st., recently was graduated from the Military Police Training Center at Fort Gordon, Ga., under the Reserve Forces Act program. Barr received basic combat train-- . ing at Fort Ord, Calif. He was graduated from South High School in 1956. Chrysler Announce Three State Sales Plymouth automobile sales in a three state area comprising Utah and Northern California, last mon-th (May) scored 40 per cent over April and 7 per cent over the corresponding period in 1956. D. H. Copeland, Area zone man-ager of Chrysler's Sales group, in commenting on the record month said. "This achievenment is a strong indication that the economy in this area is firm. We expect sales to continue at this high level." Copeland continued, "It is ob-vious to us that the auto market today reflects the widespread public acceptance of the advanc-ed styling and engineering fea-tures of the new Plymouth and other cars of the Chrysler Corpora-tion." Plymouth's sales gain contri-buted to a strong showing by the Chrysler Corporation in the three state zone last month. Sales for Chrysler Corporation cars and trucks in May were up 24 per cent over April. Since the introduction of the 1957 models last October, Ply-mouth has moved back into third place in national automobile sales and according to the latest (June 1) Automotive News estimate, has a production lead of 105,666 units over the nearest competitor. Mr. Richmond, said "No other films made available through the telephone company have been In such great demand for reshow-ings- ." Two more pictures in the first series of four produced by Frank Capra are now being com-pleted for telecasting during the 1957-5- 8 season. Program At Liberty Will Fete Old Folks Old Folks Day will be held in Liberty Park Wednesday, June 26, according to announcement of Le Grand Richards, chairman of the Old Folks Central Committee. Over 5000 "youngsters" over 70 years of age will be guests of iionor at the annual celebration lie Id this year for the eighty-fir- st time. A surprise feature starts the da yat 10:30 a.m. and the Cen-tennial Dancers, dressed in cos-tume with Thomas Rees, as mas-ters of ceremonies will. again be featured. Strong's military band will play from 11 to 12 followed by a picnic lvj.ich served under the trees, with stake and ward old folks committees in charge, and everything is free. A pro-gram with guest speakers includ-ing President David O. McKay, Gov. G. Dewey Clyde, Mayor Adiel Stewart and others, with music, dance and song will be featured on the band stand. Ash, 605 E. 3065 South, recently was grad-uated from The Ordnance School's eight-wee- k armament maintenance course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Pvt. Thomas J. Thatcher, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton E. Thatcher, 5020 Wanderlane, is a member of the 933d Antiair--i craft Artillery Missile Battalion in Brea, Calif. Thatcher, a launcher helper in the battalion's Battery A, entered the Army last January and com-pleted basic training at Fort Ord. California. |
