You wan'na win a contest? There's always something doing in Sugar House and Valentine's Day will be no exception, according to Joe Aquila, chairman of the advertising committee for . the -- Kids Valentine contest to be spon-sored by the Chamber of Com merce. , The contest is strictly for kids from ages 5 to 11 years and all they have to do is get an entry blank and create a Valentine. The Valentines are to be dropped in one of the two large boxes to be located in Keith O'Brien and J C. Penney's in Sugar House. Everyone entering the contest will receive a free ticket to the theater and there will be 14 top prizes including bikes, phono-graphs, cameras and watches and winners will be chosen from every age group. (Winners will be chosen on their originality, funniest or most attractive Valentine.) De-cision of the judges will be final. Following the contest winners names will be posted in windows of the Sugar House merchants and prizes will be picked up at the Sugar House Chamber of Com-merce office. Deadline is 5 p.m. February 13. Ii.M.C. Lions Dinner Meeting A special dinner meeting for the board of directors and members of the East Mill Creek Lions, met Monday, February 4, at the Carlton Hotel Coffee Shop. Committees were set up for the July 4 th celebration, and reports were made, of projects that are now underway. New business was discussed, and the car wash that was started is still continuing, a project to raise money to finish paying for the trees, that were donated to six of the schools, in that area. Names were taken of those, who plan to go to the state convention, to be held June 7-- 8 and 9th in Vernal, and there was a discussion of the national convention, to be held in San Francisco, June 26, 27, 28 and 29th, according to Eugene B. Duffin. License Bureau Will Open Monday In Sugar House The license plate bureau for Sugar House and community will be opened Monday, Feb. 11, in the former Bruce Transfer Building, 11S7 Wilmington Ave. The successful bureau, which opened for the first time last year in the community, expedited the purchasing of license plates to all who shopped in Sugar House. The usual hours of standing in line were eliminated The bureau will be manned by a complete staff who will handle the job in the same manner as last year. The office will be opened for the balance of the month. . Claude Thompson of Carpets Inc., who has leased the building, has donated the office space to the license department. Adequate Police j Protection Promised Sugar House Better police protection for the Sugar House area was promised by Chief of Police Skousen when and if an increased budget is al-lowed by the city commission. Speaking of the needs of the de-partment as a whole the chief pointed out that in accordance with the National Safety Council Salt Lake City's police department should be augmented by 158 men but that even with the Increased amount of money hoped for only 73 could be added to the force some of which would be assigned to the Sugar House area. In 1940 Sugar House had 33,800 people which has increased until now there are over 80,000 This has meant a great upswing in residential building from about 9,500 dwellings in 1940 to around 30,000 at present. In addition the (Continued on Page 7) Police Report "No Clues" In Armed Robery of Reed's At press time no further clues to the identity of two armed thugs, who held up the Reed's Shopping Center at 1 p.m. Tuesday and es-caped with $900, had been found, according to spokesman for the Police Department. As the one man held an auto-matic pistol over a half door to the small office, Mrs. Edith Han-sen lost no time in emptying the cash register at their demands, but purposely dropped the money on the floor hoping someone would notice what was happening. The holdup was the eighth un-solved armed robbery in the city since Jan. 1 and the first one in the Sugar House area. Thousands View Paintings Shown At Sons of Utah Pioneers Museum Throngs numbering into the thousands crowded into the Sons of the Utah Pioneer Village building Sunday to see the exhibition of Arnold Friberg's "Ten Commandment" paintings. Presiding over the showing was the perfect host Horace A. Sorensbn who from time to time briefed the guests with some of the back-ground details of the paintings and their creator Mr. Friberg, a native of Holladay. ' The pictures, in creation for sev-eral years, provided inspiration for the settings of the Cecil B. De-Mil- le production, "The Ten Com-mandments." They begin with the colorful portrayal of the finding of Moses in the bulrushes and pro-ceed through the various episodes of his life including the moving passage through the parted Red Sea, and the sensuous splendor of the Golden Calf scene. All the paintings are noble in conception, majestic in completion, filling the viewer with awe. Mr. Friberg concluded the pres-entation by personally autograph-ing several hundred souviner booklets. Another public presentation of this unique collection began yester-day at the Union Building on the campus of the University of Utah. This time a personal appearance of the artist, Mr. Friberg, is scheduled and he will talk about the paintings. The concluding day will be February 20 After that the collection will be broken up and sent to different parts of the country probably not to be re-assembled for about three years. Dr. Bennion Will Be Guest Speaker Guest speaker for the Chamber of Commerce luncheon Feb. 20th will be Dr. Adam S. Bennion. M. J. "Mode" Wright is chair-man of the meeting and has ar-ranged the outstanding program which will include a vocal selec-tion by the "well-kno- wn Jessie Evans Smith, who will sing one of Mickey Hart's new songs. The group will meet at the Beau Brummel. " There were 35 members of the Sugar House Chamber who attend-ed the "Aircade" clinic on congres-sional action Wednesday. Bank Official Speaks To Kiwariis Club John M. Wallace Jr., assistant cashier of Walker Bank., was guest speaker at the Sugar House Ki-wan- is Tuesday. Mr. Wallace talked on, "Crusade For Freedom" and showed a group of slides on conditions in Hungary and Poland. ; Dr. Robert Runnels was pro-gram chairman and Vern Mackay, president, conducted. The group met at Harman's Cafe in Sugar House. The Kiwanis board meeting was held Wednesday at the Beau Brum-mel. The committee work and budget for the year were outlined, according to Vern Mackay, presi-dent. &rtfr s I hi Jk :W: ,! David O. McKay Pres. McKay To Be On U of U Founders Day Program Pres. David O. McKay of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints will deliver the princi-pal address and dedicatory prayer at the annual University of Utah Founders Day banquet on Feb. 28. The banquet, scheduled for the new U of U Union, also will mark the formal dedication of the $2.5 million structure which opened on New Years Day. Marvin J. Bertoch, banquet chairman, and J. Grant Iverson, president of the U. Alumni Assn., said they expected the largest crowds in history to attend the combined banquet and dedication service. Pres. This week carpeting was laid in the attractive shop. SUP Magazine To Salute Bountiful The next issue of the Sons of Utah Pioneer News will salute Bountiful. Special features, news items of interest and data of the Bountiful Chapter which has been chartered, will be given. The Bountiful Chapter has taken the project to rebuild the old Heber C Kimball Grist Mill. . : Westminster Official Slate Conference Trip President Frank E. Program participants of the-- dis-trict conference of the American College Public Relations Assoc., will include Chancellor Chester M Atier of the University of Denver; James E. The meeting will be held at the University of Denver. Dr. Waddoups, Sugar House Dentist Opens New Office Dr. E. Waddoups opened his office Monday, Feb. 4, in his form-er location, in the Smoot Medical Building. Dr. Waddoups has praticed in Sugar House 23 years, in the same office. He recently retired, "but doing nothing is too difficult", he said. Attends Coast Furniture Markets S Morgan Sorensen flew to the coast where he will attend furni-ture markets in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Mr. James Armstrong, of Stand-ard Furniture Co., left Saturday for San Francsico, California, to attend the spring style shows, and attend the furniture markets. |
