Show INDEPENDENT Sugar House, Utah December 26, 1957 pa95 Lees Entertain Holiday Dinner Home for the holidays, and a record number of days with his family, is J. Bracken Lee, 2031 Laird Avenue, former Gov-ernor of Utah. For the traditional holiday dinner, turkey and all that the bird implies, they are having Mrs. Arthur Lee.mother of Mr. Lee and Mr. and Mrs. James Alley, sister and brother-in-la- w of Mrs. Lee as guests. Their son James B. Lee, jon leave from Stan-ford Law School is enjoying the visit with his parents. Their daughter Joan, unable to be home has made plans to spend the day with her cousins, Capt. and Mrs. M.R. Richards in Maryland, where the Captain is teaching at the Naval Academy. Mr. Lee will be at home until January 3rd, when he will leave for a speak-ing committment in Oklahoma. On January 15th, he will be speaking at Stanford Law School, where his son is a student. Celebrates Christmas . Christmas carols played on organ chimes have been wafted out from Westminster College campus . for two weeks. They have been heard here on occasion (depending on the wind) several blocks away from the campus. Music students Joy Hammer, Joan Shirk, Kenneth Funk have alternated at the keyboard of the school organ to entertain those on the compus. Roger Anderson chairmaned a party for the men's dormitory last Thursday. Meeting after a basketball game, the students went carol-ing; then retcrned to the dorm to see Santa Claus, exchange gifts and enjoy the refreshments served by house mother Mrs. Christmas Party The League of Utah Writers held their annual Christmas party Friday night at the home of Mrs. Lela Morris, 124 So. 6th East. A very unusual pot luck dinner was held, with guests bringing their, own "Specialty" dish. Featured at , the unusual dinner were sweet and sour pork, Spanish rice with mushrooms, assorted roast meats, earn bread, carraway bread, jellies, kosher pickled home made red cabbage, french apple pie, boysenberry pies, and strawberry pies, along with the tradiaional fruit cake, cookies, candy, nuts, coffee and a specially contrived fruit punch. The dinnerware was all of a delightful bright red. Small gifts were brought for exchange and placed under a huge Christmas tree to await Santa's appearance!. The two little granddaughters of Mrs. Morris acted as Santa's helpers, distributing the small gifts. The new officers were intro-duced by the outgoing president, C. Cameron Johns. Alice Morrey Bailey is the new president, vice president is Dorothy Handley, secretary-treasur- er is Berta Christensen. The chairman of the Christmas program, presented after the dinner was Mabeli Harmer.who announced the program. Rosalie Lloyd composed and read an original long ballad concerning Christmas 1960, at which time, the earth having been blown up, the League writers were all established on cloud no. 3. Olive Burt, longing to bring back the early atmos-phere of Christmas donned a shawl, and read a narration about a little orphan girl in the snow. Lending a few serious moments to the - festivities, Dr. Carl Christensen of the University Silent Night, We Three Kings, and O Come All Ye Faithful, with the group joining in on the choruses. To put a truly delightful ending to the party, Genevieve Groen read Christmas gift suggestions which are practically guaranteed not to appear on anyones tree ...suggestions taken from Rolf Peterson's new book, The Worst of Rolfe Peterson. Symphony Presents "Pops" Concert Everpone in the state have a will chance to enjoy the Utah Symphony Orchestra in a "Pops" Concert this season with three free concerts on the schedule at Salt Lake City, January 4. Utah State University at Logan on January 10 and Brigham Young University on January 13. The "Pops" concert has been staged in Salt Lake City for six years with an overflow ojowd every season. As a result the additional concerts have been arranged to make it possible for more people to hear the or-chestra more conveniently. The concerts will be sponsored by the Utah Oil Refining Com-pany and tickets may be se-cured at any local Utoco service station at no cost and with no obligation. Parents are urged to make it "'family, night" at the symphony. The program Is ar-ranged to appeal to everyone. Starting time at all three con-certs will be 8 p.m. instead of the usual 8:30. Reid Nibley will perform as soloist in George Gershwin's Phapsody in Blue and Bob Lentz will be. featured in the rousing and entertaining"Worried Drum-mer" by Schreiner. The delighted parents are Mr. and Mrs. James Allen, 1785 S. 11th East. Waiting at home was the sister of the young miss, Teena, by name. Grandparents of the new debutante to be are Mr. and Mrs. James B. Allen, and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Yonker, all of Salt Lake. Mrs. Allen is the former Jean Yonker. |
