Their size can be determined from the inset picture. It has been just ten years since the transistor was first demonstrated by the Bell Lab-oratories, acording to H. K. Richmond, District Manager of the Mountain States Tele-phone Company here. This unusual device, no larger than an eraser on a pencil, herald-ed what has come to be called the "new electronic age." The transistor spanned in ten years development achieved by the vacuum tube to 40 years. It can do almost everything an ordinary tube can do and do it cheaper over a longer period of time. The transistor amplifies, oscillates, has no grid, gives off no heat and operates as soon as it is turned on. It has no warm-u- p period like the vacuum tube. It has an indefinite life, perhaps as long as a cent-ury, and uses only minute amounts of power. A flash-light battery will energize a transisor for hundreds of hours. The transistor has found its way into a wide variety of uses in hearing aids, radios, fuel injection systems, portable TV sets, phonographs, clocks, toys and most of all, in the telephone industry. As its use has spread its cost has decreased. A transistor that would cost $21 in 1953 can be purchased today for $1.50. In 1957 there 'were 30 million produced and it is expected this number will climb to a half-billio- n by 1965, and the price will continue to be lower, Mr. Richmond said. Earl Nixon, spent two days visiting with Herb and Norene on their way back to their home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They had made a tour through Texas and the Southern parks. Douglas Chamberlain who formerly lived in Cottonwood Heights is visiting here from California at the home of Dal-la- s Hackanson, 2835 E. 7800 S. Walter Le Grande Collins has just returned from duty with the reserves at Ft. Ord, Cali-fornia. Son, Lee 2nd, is visit-ing in Fairmont, West Virginia with his grandparents. Claudia and Mark Rassmus-se- n had a nice two day vaca-tion trip to Lehman Cave in Nevada. They spent some time in Elko and Wells and then on home. They were accompanied by their young-sters. Locky Stratton and daughter Meridon of Cedar City, have been visiting at the home of sister Mary Barbour. Mrs. Stratton was visiting the city for a medical checkup. Cottonwood Heights (cont'd) Ira and Edna Butler were popping a few buttons in announcing the birth of a new fc'n.n-io- ii born to son Dennis, who just returned from the Army. s Mrs. Marie Nielson who re-sides at 27S9 Carole Drive was entertaining her sisters this week. Mrs. Tillie Lewis came from Farmington, New Mexico, Mrs. Lillith Neilsen and Mrs. Lorena Tietgen from Mesa, Arizona and Mrs. Thora Ilium from Ogden. Young Gene Jensen suffered a broken arm when he fell from a horse he was riding at the Winn farm on Wasatch Blvd. Seems he went by a tree and the tree brushed him off and he landed directly on his arm breaking it several inches above the wrist. Miss Kathy Allen is spending a few weeks vacation at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Allen in Escalante, Utah. Her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. g. '!"" ""Jill. : ".i. MmwJi - - 11111 " - Sugar House News cont'd Another visitor to the Brit-ish Temple dedication is Mrs. Connie Chipping, who will be returning to her home and family in St. Albans, Hertford-shire, England, after a ten-ye- ar seperation. She will leave within the next few weeks, returning in mid-Septemb- er. While their wife and mother is in Europe, William O. Chip-ping will take Delia, Andrew, Christopher and Catherine to the West Coast to visit the ocean and Disneyland. They will be gone about one week. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence A. Galland celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary Sunday, June 29. Friends and relatives visited them during the day at their home, 1193 Kensington Avenue. Birthday and wedding anni-versaries come all at once at the Jack Hummel home. Sun-day a combination celebration was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Hummel, 1023 Bryan Avenue, honoring their son Jack and his daughter Wendy on their birthday anni-versaries, and another son, Bob, and his wife, Joyce, on their wedding anniversary. Helping eat refreshments and joining in the fun were Jack's wife, Kath-leen, ' and their children, Kathy, John and Tamara, and Kath-leen's parents, Francis and Alta Jackman. Craig, Richard, Diane and Peggy Ann Hummel also helped their parents cele brate their wedding anniver-sary. Mrs. Dale Thibault is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wolff, 1633 South 10 East, awaiting word from her husband who has been sent to Virginia with the armed forces. Mrs. Thibault, former Vivian Wolff, has a six-wee- ks old. daughter, Christie Ann. Dale will be remembered as the all-st- ar athlete at Westminster College last year, Little All American recognition in foot-ball. Weddings of the Sugar House area predominate activities. Among the happy couples are: Rayola G. Husbands and Nathan Albert Ely, Redding,, California. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple, June 27, and were honored at a reception in the North Central Park Ward that evening. Miss Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hus-Husban-ds is the daughter of bands, 746 South 9 East, and Mr. Ely's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jasper K. Ely. Wednesday, June 26, Calvin A. Lambert claimed Ruth Jane Armstrong as his bride in rites in the Salt Lake Temple. Mrs. Thomas G. Lambert, 862 Browning Avenue is the bride-groom's mother, and Mrs. R. C. Armstrong, 2435 Blaine Ave. is mother of the bride. New Mr. and Mrs. Lambert are honeymooning at Lake Arrow-head and Los Angeles, and will return to Salt Lake City to make their home. Lovely Cherie Ann Savage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hal V. Savage became the bride of Grant L. Horsley, in a cere-mony in the Salt Lake Temple. Mr. and Mrs. J. LeRoy Horsley are parents of the groom. A reception in the Sterling Sill Home Living Center, at the University of Utah, honored them the evening of their marriage. The young couple will honeymoon in Mexico, re-turning to make their home in Salt Lake City. In double-rin- g rites Friday morning, Merlin A. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Smith, 1132 Emerson Avenue, and Miss Irene Winger of Long Beach, California were married in the Salt Lake Temple. An evening reception at Garden Park Ward honored the newly-wed- s after which they left for a honeymoon trip to Sun Val-ley. They will reside in Salt Lake City for the summer. Funeral services were held Tuesday for Marie Louise Kline Slink at 260 East South Temple. She had resided at 933 Logan Avenue. Burial was in Sunset Lawn Mausoleum. Arnold J. Coles, owner of the Sugar House Floral, died in a Salt Lake Hospital of a heart ailment. He had been seriously ill for several' days. He is survived by his widow and two married daughters, Carmond and Patti. |
