Show SUDAN GRASS MAKES VALUABLE COW FEED that sudan grass makes an acceptable substitute for alfalfa when the latter cannot be had bad Is shown by the results ot of a recent feeding test with dairy cows at the fort hayes branch of the kansas experiment station two lots of four holstein Holst eln cows each were fed ed through three twenty day dai periods with ten day transition periods between each of the experimental periods during the first twenty day period one lot was fed alfalfa hay bay and the other sudan grass hay the hays were reversed tor for the two to lots during the second twenty day period and again during the third period in addition the cows received thirty pounds of kafar silage dally and a grain mixture in proportion to their production when the cows cow were fed alfalfa hay bay they produced 28 pounds or about 13 per cent more milk than when they were fed the sudan hay bay the weights of the cows showed no significant changes as a result of the change in rations the cows seemed to prefer alfalfa to sudan as there was less waste of the alfalfa hay their production however did not fall a great deal when sudan hay bay was substituted for alfalfa sudan grass Is used a great deal as a hay and pasture crop in kansas and the me southwest it withstands a dry summer much better than most forage crops it isa Is a very useful emergency hay crop in the corn belt under iowa conditions fifteen to twenty pounds of seed per acre are used and the crop la is seeded in early june farmers who have no hay ground this year can make very good use of sudan grass yields are from one to two tons per acre |
