Show salt lake city governor charles R mabey was nominated re on the first ballot wednesday august receiving 16 1 6 votes from a convention in which votes were necessary to elect the fight between him and his two opponents william ff wattis of ogden and william W of kanab was easily the feature of the republican state nominating convention as it had been practically the sole item of interest in the fight lasting ma many ny weeks the total strength of mr wattis was 7 12 on the first bartot as the votes were called while mr obtained 37 14 1 4 the kane county man had not counted on great strength on the first ballot I 1 but had hoped to be able to swing a deadlock in which case he hoped to develop a very considerable astren strength ath later three other present republican state officeholders who are up foz foi were reelected the only contest being in the case of harvey H cluff attorney general H E crockett secretary of state slate and dri dr C N jensen state superintendent of I 1 public instruction were by acclamation mark tuttle state auditor and W D sutton state treasurer were prevented by the state constitution from succeeding themselves mr tuttle ran for the office of state treasurer treasur but the geographical that it was desired to give ogden a place on the state ticket defeated him and john walker of weber was elected on the second ballot for state auditor to succeed mr tuttle john E holden was an easy winner over the present chief deputy in the office walter A day it was a convention full of noise and enthusiasm all interest however had centered on the gubernatorial race and once that was decided the fighting for votes totes of the delegates became more inore local at times quite keen the convention definitely turned down any proposal to remove the school system from the realm of politics efforts to get a declaration in the party platform failed before the committee on resolutions largely it is claimed by thi the school men because the nature of one of the proposals which would have merely indorsed endorsed indor sed a proposed constitutional i amendment was misunderstood the delegates were in no mood to amend the state platform after it had been read and refused to accept a proposed declaration of policy offered from the floor of the convention A formal keynote speech by congressman don B colton re nominated cd the day before from the first congressional district and an extended talk on national issues from senator reed smoot were the main attempts at oratory during the day the nominating speeches were limited to seven minutes and were concise statements of facts with an occasional argument as to the strength of a candidate as a vote getter rather than flights of oratory |
