oneil T asking that all the land buildings and equipment now known assort duchesne on the former uintah indian reservation uintah county utah be given over to the state of utah for the pur pr of establishing a branch agricultural college to the president of the united states and to the senate and house of representatives of the united states slates of america in n congress assembled the governor and the legislature of the state of utah respectfully ask your honorable body that all the grounds buildings and equipment now designated h as port fort duchesne in uintah county utah be giyen over to th the 0 state of utah for the purpose of establishing a branch agricultural ri cultural college that shall be under the management and supervisions per visions of the agricultural college situated at logan utah I 1 your memoria lists represent that Fort duchesne is a former military post now abandoned and consists of mang good substantial buildings stables and water system all of which are deteriorating abing by reason of not aupied and deptin repair and whereas said lands are in ev every ery way adapted for experimental i purposes in agriculture by reason odthe of the various kinds of 01 soils and the splendid climate and conditions of that particular part of the former uintah indian reservation which make it an ideal place for such agricultural demonstration college and whereas fort duchesne is situated in the center of the largest agricultural district in the state of utah with ample water and everything nee necessary essary for agricultural purposes and development and whereas there are ample build ings at white rocks utah on said former indian reservation for the transacting of all business connected with the indian department and whereas we believe the making by the government of fort duchesne with its splendid buildings and water system into an agricultural eap exp experiment station is the best investment the go could malce make resolved that copies of this demori memori memorial al be engrossed and for waded one each to the president the senate and the house of representatives to senator reed smoot senator george sutherland congressman joseph howell and J L mays with the request that congressional a delegation use every legitimate effort to cause the provisions of this memorial to be enacted into law by the congress of the united states A petetin for the relief of settlers on the former uintah indian reservation to the senate and house of representatives in congress assembled sem bled your memoria lists the governor and legislature of the state of utah respectfully represent that whereas the act provi providing dine for the opening to settlement of the uintah indian re reserva tori provided that the settlers alers taking up said land under the homestead act should be required to pay per acre at time of final filial proof for the land entered and whereas the settlers have been een obliged to bear the expense of irrigation canals cabals and ditches and have spent approximately half a million dollars on said projects and whereas as a result of the expenses above mentioned menti oled the settlers on the said former reservation are now reduced to extreme financial embarrassment and in many cases to actual iua want and whereas said per acre is to be co collected ll 11 acted for the benefit of the indians who formerly occupied said land wherefore be it resolved that we the governor and legislature of the state of utah respectfully memorialize the members of congress to enact into law a measure providing for relief relied of the homesteaders in said former uintah indian reservation to the effect that no fee be required from said settlers except the deposit required for entry and that the only requisite for patent to sidd land be substantial proof that homesteaders have lived on the land the required period and have complied in all resl respects acts with the law and that further furi any money du due e the indians for said land to be paid by the national government and in cases where such land has been proved upon that the national government m ent shall return to the homesteaders ste aders all moneys for said land except the original filing fee required by homestead law since ince my arrival home I 1 have received many communications from different parts of the former uintah indian reservation in in regard to the free homestead memorial passed by the eleventh sess session alolf and also the grazing land measure and the fort duchesne proposition all very important nt measures measures if followed up and 17 i a acted into law by the congress of the united states I 1 the author oi of these measures feel sure that by proper work in washington they may become I 1 laws ws some one should go to W washington a sh ington and by honest earnest work get the facts before the s senators and representatives of congress I 1 am convinced that once the story of our settlement on these lands has been told in detail with all the hardships that naturally comes with the settlement of a new country where s uch such extensive canal building as we it have ave had to 06 ff here bere our distance from the railroad the difficulty of getting supplies in and the hundred arid one difficulties that are not met with in the rain belt where the clearings of brush from the land is
