Show Know Your Schools .... . . - i Frequent Home And School Contacts Necessary By Arietta Williams Primary Supervisor During the past few weeks, a high percentage of the parents par-ents of the children attending the schools of Duchesne Coun-jty. Coun-jty. visited the schools and had personal conferences with the teachers Some schools had as high as' seventy-five per cent of their students represented by at least one parent. One teacher reported that she had a conference with, a parent of every child in her class. I think this is a remarkable record. This interest in the schools is a clear indication "that the schools of Duchesne County belong be-long to the people. One of the most difficult educational ed-ucational problems is concern-' ed with reporting to' parents the educational progress of their children. It is my belief that the ancient and honorable system of grading Children by numbers or letters, creates friction between the home and school; that it casts a pall on relations between teachers and parents. It's a system under Which teachers pretend to an accuracy they know does not exist; under which children are exalted for doing what they ought to do anyway; and under which they are humiliated for not 'being1 aible to do what they could not do under any circumstances. cir-cumstances. I also believe that the most important part of a reporting system is a teacher conference with , parents I believe such conferences should be held regularly, reg-ularly, systematically. The parents par-ents calls to the school should become a regular routine and not restricted to times of trouble. Our schools are to be congratulated con-gratulated on the fine activity called Parents Day. But is once a year enough? Could this activity ac-tivity be held suocessfuMy in the evening to permit more fathers to attend and to remove the necessity of children missing miss-ing a day of school? There is only one solution to making and keeping our schools the kind of schools we want them to be and that is through better and more frequent fre-quent contacts between the home and the school. |
