Show Story Of Rescuing Friend From Pontes Creek Is Told By Clifton Jenkins Clifton Jenkins, who is em-' ployed at Bradshaw Auto Parts of Roosevelt, tells how he worked his way and finally succeeded suc-ceeded in rescuing a friend, Franklin Spencer, from the water wa-ter of Montes Creek just east of Victory Park. Franklin is working for Snow Machinery. The following experience took place Monday, July 1: "We were swimming," said Clifton, "when Franklin went up under the bridge. Finally he came out, telling me that he was dizzy, so he decided that he would go over on the sand bar where there wasn't much water. I went across first to assure Franklin that he could touch bottom and then told him to i push his weight across with his legs. But apparently he didn't do that and tried to swim it. As he doesn't know how to swim, he sank and went down 1 in the water some seven or eight feet. As I jumped for him, he grabbed hold of me and with an arm lock around my neck and his legs around my stomach, he turned me so that his weight was on top of me. I don't remember how I -got loose from him, but I -did and came up for air but Franklin didn't come up. Finally I got another chance to take hold of him, and as I did so he passed out and I attempted to move him to the bank. As I tried to do this, he came to enough to grab for me, but missed, and I had ' to. come up for a quick breath of air. When I reached ;him again he had passed out and his face had turned a bluish blu-ish purple and his eyes and lips were swelling. After fighting the current and towing him also, I succeeded in getting him to the bank, where I administered artificial respiration. He soon came to and after a few minutes was back on his feet and we were on our way to Roosevelt. I don't know how we ever made it, but we did, and all I have to say is that I don't think anybody knows the feeling of death until he comes as close to it as we did." |
