Hall, Mayor Homer P. Ed - Varus and members C. L. Ash-''ton Ash-''ton and J. V. McLea, were that , the committee wanted more M time to study annexation of i4 western Uintah county and that ; there is now insufficient time i to get the 1,500 signatures need-" need-" :j ed by June 5 to place county j consolidation on the election ballot. Committee members emphasized, empha-sized, however, that the committee com-mittee will remain permanent ,ip study the three propositions, one of which it expects to pre- ji sent to the electorate next year. la1 Mr. Ashton said the additional 1 months gained by postponement igg! will give the committee time to present all the issues to the , people. The consolidation plan, '. he said, has met with consider-' consider-' able opposition in Roosevelt, i but its merits have been understood under-stood and admitted by many. Repercussions from the consolidation con-solidation controversy Tuesday i brought the resignation of E. J. (Nixon, of Roosevelt, from the ' committee. Gordon E. Harmston, ."Soosevelt. had resigned arli-j-. Mr. Nixon said he was not 1 sympathetic toward consolida-; consolida-; tion plans, and presented the following fol-lowing list of objections: (1) The i people will never accept consol-; consol-; idation, and hard feelings and a growing dislike for the Roos-' Roos-' evelt businessman will be the final result. (2) Consolidation would mean extreme, centralization centraliza-tion in Vernal, at one end of a large county. (3) Expected savings in county administration following consolidation would be minimized by additional travel trav-el and a need for more county officials. (4) Duchesne and surrounding sur-rounding areas would suffer. (5) Citizens of western Duchesne county would have to travel an abnormally long distance to transact county business. Friday a mass meeting to protest pro-test consolidation was held at Duchesne, with Mayor Otto Johnsen presiding. Duchesne citizens cit-izens registered unanimous disapproval dis-approval of consolidation plans, and discussed ways to combat them. |
