Show Roosevelt Club Joins In B-P17 IVeek Celebration During National Business Women's Wo-men's Week, Sept. 23-29, the Busi-nes Busi-nes and Professional Women of America would like to bring before be-fore the public some interesting facts about their aims, organization organiza-tion and membership. BPW was founded in 1919 at the request of the Secretary of War because World War I had shown that there was a need. There was no central organization through which to reach women vitally needed in times of emerge ency to fill key jobs. Two hundred hun-dred twelve women met in St. Louis to form the first B.P.W. group. That was a very different picture from the 170,000 women in all 48 states, Hawaii and Alaska who now make up the federation. Any woman who earns the money for her own bread and butter is eligible to become a member. Today the federation has members ranging from Mayors to plumber to senators. Yes, don't forget that the only woman senator, sena-tor, Margaret Chase Smith, is also a BPW member. The Roosevelt club is proud of the fact that the only woman in the City council is also a BPW member. Each club has a health and safety program. Among other things, the Roosevelt club was responsible re-sponsible for the well in the city park. This summer it was especially especi-ally important in the city health problem. The slogan for this week is "First in Leadership." The clubs would like to prove that by leading lead-ing the way to the polls for America's 20 million women this November. |
