Show THIS IS A PLAN THAT APPLIES TO US ALL WE MUST SUPPORT EACH OTHER Occasionally we hear a Roosevelt ousinessman complain that too many people do their shopping in other cities or towns. Or the complaint is made that too many people buy by mail order. And the businessman add, most often rightfully, that items purchased out of town can be obtained in local stores at no greater cost. Then, too, the complaint sometimes is directed at a fellow merchant, many of whom buy "outside" without thinking that such action hurts other businesses and consequently con-sequently hurts themselves. We also have noted on occasion that the businessman who does the complaining about his fellow merchants is himself one of the worst offenders in this matter of buying elsewhere. He, or members of his family, all too often pursue that age-old theory that the rules apply to the other fellow. Buying at home is everybody's business, and if everyone makes it a consistant habit, local stores grow, carry larger, better stocks, sell them at lower figures. But whether the out-of-town buyer be merchant or farmer, clerk or teacher, no matter what his place, he is truly hurting himseLf. If he adds up the dollars he spends out of town, then considers the cost of travel to spend those dollars, will he find that he has truly saved? He must remember that if his local merchant sells more, the merchant buys more. Buying more, he pays less and sells for less. It is basic in business. There is no guaranteed solution to the problem. But there are ways which every businessman can counteract the tendency to "bargain hunt" out of town. First, of course, he must do "unto others" he must buy at home if he expects others to do the same. Second, and just as important, he must let people know that he has equal quality merchandise at an equal price. The list of reasons is almost limitless, and a little common com-mon sense, a little loyalty to our hometown are essential ingredients in the recipe for a prosperous, happy community. With merchandising daily becoming more competitive and certain to become more so as time goes by Roosevelt merchants will do well to individually practice their own preachments, and to also drive hard toward the goal of holding business at home. It is a plan that applies to all of us, regardless of our type of business ! 30 |
