Cover Ditch, Aid Lagoon Street Urged By Chamber Of Commerce T Three Uintah Basin Lawmakers Are Guests Of Group At Dinner Meet The board of directors of the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce Com-merce entertained the Uintah Basin's legislative group, members mem-bers of the Duchesne County Commission and the mayor and city councilmen of Roosevelt at a special dinner meeting at the Frontier Grill Cafe Monday night. "Boost the Uintah Basin," was the theme and purpose of the meeting. Newly elected directors di-rectors of the chamber were introduced at the meeting. Chamber President Gordon Harmston presided over th meeting with most of the old board and the five newly elected elect-ed directors in attendance. Thos.; being elected to serve 3-year terms on the board were Howard How-ard Harrison, Clem Labrum, William Murdock, Dick Owen and Merlin Sullivan. Introduction of guests, which included Senator-elect B. H. Stringham, who will represent Uintah and Duchesne Counties; Representatives William Broth-jrson, Broth-jrson, of Duchesne County, and Clair Hopkins, of Uintah Coun ty, and Jesse Cheney, Vernal Chamber of Commerce legislative legis-lative committee chairman, was -nade by Mr. Harmston. Robert Montgomery, legislative legislat-ive committee chairman of the ocal chamber, presented several iroblems to the group which included: First, covering the ditch along Highway 40 from the Gulch to Union High Schoo i; Second, opening Lagoon Street to Union High; Third, improving access roads feeding into the arger centers in the area; fourth, establishing a Utah Highway engineer's office to serve Eastern Utah in Duchesn.i County; Fifth, investigating the possibility of taxing productive land owned by Indians in the Basin; and Sixth, keeping in contact with the legislators dur-'.ng dur-'.ng the coming session of the Utah legislature. Assurance was given by tha three law-makers that they vould work for those things .hat would improve the TTintah Basin, and emphasized that they would go -"to bat"- for cov-jring cov-jring the gulley that parallels highway 40 and is on state property: pro-perty: and would explore everv lvenue of help for the Lagoon Street project. Mr. Harmston announced the annual membership meeting of the local chamber was set for January 17, at which time new officers that will be elected in the near future will be installed, and various other activities o! the group will be aired. |
