Show CLIFF MEMMOTT. Editor i WILL YOU' BE HOME TO SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH YOUR FAMILY . . . ? Continuing our support as a newspaper with na- ,' tional and state safety councils, a portion of my column ' this week is again being devoted to extending a plea for safety on our highways ... The following editorial was prepared and released by the Utah Safety Council WILL YOU BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS? "That depends bn how you drive your car between noW and Christmas." declares G. Ernest Bourne, executive secretary of the Utah Safety Council, recently. "The Safety Council lists eleven rules for safe walking walk-ing which should always be kept in mind, no matter what the need of hurry may be: 1. Cross streets at CORNERS only. 2. Never walk into the street from behind parked cars. 3. Obey traffic signs and signals cross on GREEN or WALK only. 4. Wait on sidewalk not in street for GREEN light or for gap in the traffic if corner has no traffic sig- ! nal. 5. Cross streets in crosswalks don't cross interjections inter-jections diagonally. 6. Look LEFT and then RIGHT for traffic while crossing. Watch sharply for turning cars. 7. After getting off bus or streetcar, don't go around it, front or rear. Wait . until it leaves before crossing. 8. Don't cross street when in unfit physical condition. con-dition. Get glasses if your eyes are bad. 9. Don't play in or run into the street. 10. At night in poorly lighted street carry something white. Don't rely on drivers seeing you. 11. Walk on LEFT facing traffic where no sidewalk side-walk is provided. v E v l DUCHESNE STAKE GOLD-GREEN BALL FLOOR SHOW WAS TOPS ... Last Friday it was my privilege, along with my wife ar.d several of our friends to participate in the Duchesne Stake Gold and Green Ball held at the Duchesne Chapel. , . . There wasn't anything particularly outstanding about the dance itself that made it stand out above social affairs af-fairs of its kind I have enjoyed in the past. However, there was one phase of the program that did stand out the floor show, which featured approximately' approxi-mately' 40 young people from various wards in their stake .... Each of the participating wards presented a different dance, and then all joined in the opening number num-ber as well as the finale. The dance numbers were outstanding, and too much praise cannot be pointed toward the participants and those -ho taught the young people. They were magnificent and .' join others in publically praising them for their fine I accomplishments. I The most refreshing thing about the floor show was seeing young boys and girls taking part in an activity activ-ity supported by the Mutual Improvement Association of the LDS Church, which will do much to develop their personalities and character. . . . Duchesne Stake MIA j leaders should revel in the fine success they have at- ' tained in this respect, and most certainly they offer a challenge to other MIA organizations and young men I and women 'of MIA age. V E; V MERCHANTS ARE READY TO MAKE ; YOUR CHRISTMAS PLEASANT .... ! " During the past few days I have observed the outstanding out-standing array of merchandise ideas local merchants have on hand to make Christmas this year a pleasant one, and easy to secure the many items needed to aid Santa Claus in his big job. During the couple of weeks ahead, the men and vomen who make up Main Street will pool a portion of their financial resources to sponsor parties for the children of your community .... They are also set up to aid you in your Christmas shopping problems . . . Always Al-ways they stand ready to back up any and every pro-2ressive pro-2ressive project that will make your town and mine a better bet-ter place in which to live. And that proposes a very important question that 0 you, and you, can answer Are you supporting them? Are you sold on the "Trade at Home" philosophy? . Or are you one of those who think because an item comes from some outside city, it is better quality even though it costs 'time and money to travel to the city, or delay and uncertainty in ordering from a mail order house? It would be a cinch to build up your own community commun-ity with better streets, water systems, schools, churches, . etc. if we'd au support those who are supporting us. Why lot begin now, this winter, in becoming better, acquainted with your hometown merchant he's a pretty good guy, "id really has, a lot to offer you. : 30 |
