Show CLIFF MEMMOTT. Editor ) El rfs SURPRISING WHAT A LITTLE EFFORT V jujd COOPERATION CAN DO FOR A TOWN .... "Never do I remember when the business district of Roosevelt looked as clean and orderly as it did last Friday morning as the community awaited the Region Five Music Festival, and I have lived here a long time," was, in sub- s stance, a statement made by a leading citizen in my presence pres-ence This statement was typical of many others who expressed themselves regarding the street washing and l cleaning-up job done by the city employees and owners Ifi and operators of business property starting with Wednes-IV Wednes-IV da. And last week proved the point, where leadership is exercised and there is an objective to aspire ( to. Fearful that I might overlook individuals who contribu-" contribu-" ted much to the success of the "City Clean-Up," I am not going to mention names, but would like to extend my commendation to the mayor and city council; fire depart- nJ ment personnel; city street and police employees, and to fi the merchants who all banded together to do a job that ? each stood back and admired when it was done. However, we have just made a start. The spring and summer season is just beginning, and with it comes the tourist season when this community will be invaded daily with people traveling east, west, north and south. . . . Some might even be looking for. a place to establish their future residence. ... If we are to, attract our share of the tourist trade, which is among the five top industries in the nation, then we must prepare for it. And they'll look at our streets and at our city if it is clean, they'll stop here; otherwise, they'll go on east or west, and the retail " stores, cafes, motels, filling stations, etc. will lose that ' trade which they should get. Mayor J. V. McLea Tuesday was asked for a comment concerning the "Clean-Up," and was loud in his praise t , (or the fine job that was done. He was equally hopeful that every main street operator would see to It that the 7 i !::nt and side of his place of business was cleaned up daily. .... "It will take only five minutes to sweep the side-y, side-y, vi'ks each morning, or whenever it is needed, and to pile - tt debris in the can provided, or where it can be picked Bptej which will do iiv: part of 'Jvi job," the .
