Show Ute Huskies Win Top Honors In Annual Tourney Top honors in the second annual an-nual Huskies basketball tournament tourna-ment held last week at the Roosevelt Roos-evelt Elementary School gym went to the team which sponsored the meet, as the all-Ute Indian team proved themselves the better team .as they beat an all-star team play-'ing play-'ing under the name of Bridgeland. The game was a thrilling climax to the three-night affair that began be-gan on Wednesday, April 6, and lasted through Thursday and Friday. Fri-day. The contest was a nip and tuck affair with never more than three points separating the two teams and the lead changing several sev-eral times. Second place went to Bridge-land, Bridge-land, with Bert's taking third and consolation going to the Lapoint Whirlwinds. Bert's beat the Roosevelt Roos-evelt M Men team 37-35, and La-point La-point handed a team from Alta-mont Alta-mont a 68-33 lacing in the final games. Pick All-Star Team Coaches and officials participating participat-ing in the tournament were polled for an all-star team and an outstanding out-standing player of the meet, with the latter honor going to Doyle Huber, member of the Lapoint Whirlwinds, and a former Union High star, who is attending school at Weber College. Huber, along with Leon Ross, Bridgeland; David Forcloud, Huskies; Ken Nickell, Bert's and Richard (Packy) Fenn, Bridgeland, rate the first team. On the second team the committee commit-tee announced John Perry, Lapoint; La-point; Earl McKenna, M Men; Charles (Smiley) Denver, Huskies; Russell Gingell, M Men, and Byrell Lamb, Bridgeland, as the selection. An interesting observation on the all-star team is that Ken Nickell, Doyle Huber, Leon Ross, and Packy Fenn, on the first team and John Perry and Byrell Lamb were members of Union's Class B championship team of 1953. Nickell Nick-ell was an all-stater in '53 and Fenn was likewise honored this year as a member of the first team. Ute Tribe Is Sponsor The winning Huskie team, which is composed of players who have participated in the Ute Indian recreational re-creational program during the past couple of years, and recently proved their superiority over other Indian teams in an all-Indian tournament, tour-nament, sponsored by the Ute Tribe recreation department. They beat an all-star team from Fort Washakie, Wyoming who invaded their reservation by the score of 48-47 in the finals. The Huskies are coached by Homie Secakuku, who was also tournament director. Assisting on the committee was Henry Cuch, treasurer. |
