Show Utah 4-H Winners Go to Chicago STATE championship honors for 1951 have been won by four 4-H ., Club members in the Deseret State for outstanding work in the .' National Canning, Dress Revue, Farm and Home Safety and Home Improvement programs. Their awards are all-expel se trips to the 30th National 4-H Cluh Congress in Chicago, November25-29. Brief outlines of their records follow: Gayle Bringhurit Ann Montgomery Nadene Onosen Margrarra Sfander To fashion a softly draped dress or a tailored tweed, is simple for Gayle Bringhurst, 16, of Murray, 4-H Dress Revue winner win-ner in Utah. She has learned to choose, design and budget her wardrobe to suit her individual personality, and has developed poise and good grooming along the way. This year, the third that she represented Salt Lake County at State Dress Revue, Gayle wore a dress of navy blue taffeta and coat of chartreuse wool. The dress featured a stand-up collar, elbow length sleeves and. a flared skirt. The coat which came just to the waist also ha'd a stand-up collar and cuffed sleeves. Her accessories, ac-cessories, a navy blue velvet hat, bag and gloves completed, an attractive at-tractive costume. Last summer Gayle represented the 4-H Family Life Institute at the University of Utah. Gayle was a guest of Simplicity Pattern Co. at the Chicago Chi-cago Club Congress. A comfortable and attractive home is no problem to the Montgomery Mont-gomery family of Heber, since daughter Ann, 17, has become interested in-terested in the 4-H Home Improvement Im-provement program. As state winner in the 1951 program she was awarded a trip to Chicago as guest of The Sears-Roebuck Foundation. A club member seven years she has been junior leader for three. She has completed projects in beef, foods, clothing and leadership. In home improvement improve-ment she redecorated six rooms, made 10 major articles and 20 others. She excelled in each and has received State Fair blue ribbons rib-bons in all of them. Her prized possession is an old fashioned platform rocker which she reup-holstered. reup-holstered. She has been active in school and church affairs and All of these activities are conducted under the direction of the Extension Exten-sion Service of the State Agricultural College and USDA cooperating. fifty cents worth; and the sixth grade, forty-four dollars and twenty-five cents worth. The total to-tal amount for all six grades was two hundred and forty-four dollars. The fifth grade won the contest con-test by the narrow margin of twenty-five cents. Lane VanTa.s-sell, VanTa.s-sell, of the fifth grade, was high salesman for that grade. He sold seventy dollars worth of cards. In winning the contest the fifth grade will receive a party with refreshments, furnished by th3 school. They plan to have tha party Dec. 21. They will have ice cream and cookies for refreshments. re-freshments. They will have a ' served each office in her club. Nadene Ottosen, 16, of Tabiona, has demonstrated what vigilant safety practices can mean to a community, and has been named State 4-H Safety champion. By means of surveys, demonstrations and clean-up campaigns, she has made her home and community more safety-conscious and has helped -to prevent accidents. Her industry also won for her the General Motors trip award. During Dur-ing six years in 4-H she has com-. , pleted many projects. Her safety work in the past two years is' especially outstanding. On a survey sur-vey of six nearby farms she found many hazards. Nadine brought these to the attention of her neighbors and suggested improvements. im-provements. For making an outstanding record (n her food preservation . project Margretta Stander, 16, of Bear River City was named" State champion in the 4-H Canning Can-ning Achievement program. Experimenting Ex-perimenting with new ideas, she has broadened her knowledge of -better homemaking methods through her 4-H arti Home canning can-ning also has made it easy to follow the nutrition yardstick and keep the budget low. During six years in club work, she has canned can-ned 4,568 quarts of food, prepared pre-pared 210 meals, 153 baked products prod-ucts and 294 separate dishes. This summer she saved the raspberry rasp-berry crop which ripened while her parents w e r e vacationing. Margretta has also helped put up a two year food supply for her church. At 3:30 that afternoon the bell will ring ending the 1951 school year. The children will have a welcome vacation from school waiting for that jolly old fellow, old St. Nick, with his many toys and other presents.
