' Fenn, Eaton Top Player Poll; Six On 1st Team Never since the Roosevelt Standard Stan-dard and Uintah Basin Record began be-gan selecting an all-star team from the five Uintah Basin schools has there been more top talent wearing the colors of their schools. This fact has made tht selection of an all-star team another an-other difficult proposition being simplified only by the assistance of about thirty fans who sent in a selection by using the ballot supplied by the papers the past two weeks. There has never been a question ques-tion in the minds of those who have seen Union and Uintah play ball this winter but what the two finest ball players in the league led the Cougars and Utes into a play-off for the title and a place in the state "B" tournament, which Uintah won 43-41. ' When the votes were counted, Richard (Packy) Fenn, Union's star, had collected a total of 255 points, with Valoy Eaton, the Utes' great center, trailing him with 239 points. Both were mentioned on every ballot, with Packy getting get-ting 17 first place rankings as compared with 13 for Eaton. Thus we select as the captain of the 1955 all-star team, Packy Fenn, who, in the estimation of this writer, is the finest all-around high school basketball player seen irr many moon, and is rated the Basin's best all-around playgr. Praising Fenn for his outstanding outstand-ing qualities, takes nothing away from Valoy Eaton, who still has , another year to develop in high school. He led the league in scoring, scor-ing, being especially effective under un-der the basket on tip-ins, and has a potent hook-shot. Packy ranged third in scoring in the district, and is without doubt the hardest man in the league to stop. He can hit from outside, and his ability to shoot with either hand makes him deadly on drive-ins. Selected Six Players Choosing the first two players" was easy, but when the ballots' were all counted and the remaining remain-ing players evaluated, we found four other kids so close together we are listing six players on the first team. We'll leave it entirely up to the public as to positions these kids should be assigned. Another junior, David Hislop, high scorer on the third place Altamont Al-tamont team, garnered 128 points in the voting to take third spot (Continued On Back Page) ALL-STAR TEAM .... (Continued from Page 1) on the first team. Without David, the Longhorns could never have achieved the spot they did, and viewing the fact he'll be back ! next year leading his team in quest of the title, is gratifying, to the Altamont followers. Fourth in the voting was Nor- j man Hanson, a blond kid from Union with a terrific jump shot, and a tower of strength on de-1 fense. Norman has teamed well j with Fenn and the rest of the Cougars, Cou-gars, and although not a heavy scorer, his 6 to 12 point average per game, has often been the points needed to win a ball game. So close was the voting for Terry Ter-ry Anderson from Uintah, and Jimmy Grant, . the spark-plug of the Duchesne five, that they are given equal consideration for the fifth and sixth spots on the first team. Terry is a dangerous boy from outside, and was the play-maker play-maker for the champion Utes. Against Union at Rangely he was dynamite with his outside shooting. shoot-ing. He is a smooth floor man, and contributed greatly to the success suc-cess of the Utes the past two years. Little Jimmy Grant has been to the Eagles of Duchesne what His-lop His-lop was to Altamont; or Fenn to Union he's the kid that kept them in every game of the season, and because of his hustle and scoring scor-ing ability, is deserving of a spot on the all-star team. ' Second Team Choices Now that the selection of a first team is over, we offer the following fine bunch of kids as second team choices: Lane Josie, a fine junior from Tabiona, is the kid voted the captain spoj because ) of his strong finish in league play. Another junior, Snellon Johnson ' of Union, along with three seniors, j Gary Hatch, Uintah; Ken Ander-1 ton, Union, and Ronnie Abegglen, j Uintah, make up the second team. i On the third team we place Ray Pace, Tabiona; Rulon Gilbert, Un-1 ion; Larry Ross, Union; Acel Muse, ( Duchesne and Dee Farnsworth, Altamont. Al-tamont. Pace, Ross and Muse are juniors, and Gilbert and Farnsworth Farns-worth are seniors. There you have the 1955 all-star team chosen by popular vote of the fans and the editor of The Standard and Record. We know not all will agree with our choices, but are confident every person who has consistently followed the teams during the season, will vote this a very successful year, and that some of the best ball players ever to represent the five Basin I schools were seen in action. |
