Show FARManJHOMEte UTAH STATE EXTENSION SEKVirB ACUICULTUKR UMh VCONUMirji By Louis A. Jensen, County Agent Mary Lois Reichert Home Agent Now is the time that we all have so much empty freezer space, either in our home freezers freez-ers or our lockers. Wasted freezer freez-er space is wasted money! Use your freezer to its full capacity. Now is a good time to put beef in the lockers. At the present time, there is a definite surplus of meats on the market, and consequently the price is lower than it has been for years. If you have to buy meat to put in your lockers now would be the best time for an economical beef buy. When wrapping the meat for freezing, use two wraps. That is, use a freezer cellophane or a heavy aluminum foil wrap and then an outer wrapping of freezer paper, stockinette or some other material. The only exception to the rule of having two "wraps" would be where you use the locker paper that has the cellophane or plastic covering on the inside. This paper looks like, and is a single piece of paper, but it gives the protection of a double wrap. Be careful in wrapping your product. The main purposes of wrapping are: (a) to keep the air out and (b) to keep the moisture mois-ture in. When you are wrapping any food for freezing, be sure and work all the air out of the package that you can. On Saturday, April 25, at the Roosevelt Junior High School, there is going to be a very important im-portant meeting for all who are going to lead 4-H clubs this year. Starting at 10:00 -a.m., there will be a County 4-H Leaders Training School. David Sharp, Jr., state supervisor of 4-H work, will be here and will take part on the program. During Dur-ing the day, we will also hear from Mrs. Dot Ottosen, Mrs. Er-ma Er-ma Andexton, Mrs. Marie Benson, Ben-son, Marlene Bleazard, Mrs. Grace Larsen and Keith Lemon. Anyone who' is going to lead a 4-H club this year should toe in attendance at this meeting. Have you tried the new cleaner for copper that is now on the market? It is relatively easy to use, and will not damage dam-age the copper at all. This cleaner can successfully be used on copper-bottomed pans and ! any other copper articles such as planters, vases candle holders, etc. It will remove the tarnish and make the article "look like new" again. Do you know which grain varieties are best for this area? To help farmers deciding this important question, we are conducting con-ducting a demonstration this year, on the Carl Van Tassel farm in Bridgeland. Here 11 different grain varieties have been planted. They are as follows: fol-lows: Bonneville, Velvon, Trebi, Harlan, Overland, Uton, Swedish Swed-ish Select, CI-6611, Lemhi, Federation, Fed-eration, Dicklow Club. Markers will be placed so that visitors will be able to identfy each variety. The Duchesne County Extension Service, and Mr. Van Tassell, invite people to this area to come and see these varieties, var-ieties, during the growing season sea-son and especially just before harvest time. These plantings will be harvested and weighed I to obtain definite information on the performance of each variety var-iety under local conditions. Now is the time to' spray Alfalfa Alf-alfa for Weevil control. Three chemicals are recommended this year. They are: Chlordane, Diel-drin, Diel-drin, and Heptachlor. Although Heptachlor has bnly been tested for one year, it is being ap-, proved because it gave good control, and is less expensive than the other two materials. |
