Show Duchesne Has Lowest School Tax . . . Prepared By Utah Educational Association For the 1954-55 school year the Duchesne District had the lowest school property tax levy of any of Utah's 40 school districts. This is among the information contained in a Utah Education Association As-sociation research bulletin, "Educational "Edu-cational Differences Among Utah School Districts," it was announced announ-ced today by Rowan C. Stutz, district dis-trict superintendent. For the 1954-55 year Duchesne levied total school property taxes of 20 mills, compared to the state' average of 27.9 mills, the UEA study shows. The study also shows that the district was below the statp average aver-age in its ability to support school's, as measured by the amount of assessed' valuation for each school child in average daily attendance. For the 1954-55 year the assessed valuation per student in the Duchesne District was $3,-265 $3,-265 compared to a state average of $4,808. Duchesne relies heavily on state funds for support of its schools, the study indicates. In 1953-54 the district levied a 16.9 mill property pro-perty tax to operate and maintain its schools. If the district had received no state help that year it would have had to levy a 59.66 mill tax to accomplish the same purpose, the UEA study shows. The study shows that the Duchesne' Du-chesne' District is far below state average in the percentage of its teaching staff fully certified by the State Department of Public Instruction. This means, generally, that Duchesne has more teachers with less than the specified amount of training than most other oth-er districts in the state. For the 1953-54 year, 65.4 per cent of Duchesne's Du-chesne's teaching staff was fully certified. The state average was 83.5 per cent. (Continued on Back Page) -for bachelor degree teachers' in Duchesne are slightly below the state average. Duchesne's schedules sched-ules range from $3,200 to $4,295 compared to the state range of $3,121 to $4,347. The ration of teachers to pupils pu-pils in the Duchesne District is considerably above state' averages. Duchesne, in 1953-54, the study shows, had one classroom teacher for every 26.6 pupils enrolled. The average for the' state as a whole was 33.1, considered by most educators edu-cators to be too high. |
