Show Bond Sales Drop After Utah Push In Special Drive After setting a remarkable record in overcoming a tremendous tremen-dous deficit in the last two weeks of the Independence Drive for the sale of U. S. Savings Sav-ings bonds, and eventually beating beat-ing the national average, Utahns fell into another slump in the purchase pf savings bonds during dur-ing August, Charles L. Smith, state chairman, announced this week. . August sales of Series E bonds amounted to only $697,-085 $697,-085 this year compared to $998,-096, $998,-096, a drop of $301,011 or approximately ap-proximately 30 per cent according accord-ing to Mr. Smith. Combined i and G sales this year amounted to $154,116 compared to $diJ,-784 $diJ,-784 or a drop of 51 per cent, while total sales reached only 851,201 this year compared to $1,311,880, a drop of $460,679, or a loss of 35 per cent in totals. All counties were appreciably off their regular purchases, according ac-cording to Chairman Smith probably pro-bably from the pressure of the Independence Drive. While no current "war bond" drive exists, according to Mr. Smith, the purchase pur-chase of U. S. Savings bonds at Utah's usual high level will aid considerably in the war effort ef-fort by relieving the financial tension, the possibility of inflation infla-tion or so-called "war buying and will reduce the extent of wartime or defense taxes.
