Show Commerce Dept. Figures For Two Decades Show Significant Changes In distribution Of Income Between States And Regions During That Period Figures compiled by the U. S. Department of Commerce on income payments to individuals throughout the nation in the last two decades show significant signifi-cant changes in the distribution of income between states and regions in the period. v While every section of the country has participated in the great growth of the economy since 1940, the greatest relative gains were scored by states and areas where prewar incomes had consistently been below the national average. As a result, these areas are now enjoying an appreciably larger proportion propor-tion of the nation's income than both in 1929 and before the war, a development with widespread wide-spread beneficial implications for millions of American families fam-ilies and the nation. Last year, for example. South Dakota for the first time appeared ap-peared in the rank of the top ten states in per caDita income payments to individuals. The year before this performance was duplicated by North Dakota. Da-kota. Up to a few years ago these states had been consistently consist-ently below the national average aver-age in per capita income payments pay-ments to individuals, and their gains are indicative of the financial fi-nancial and economic progress of agriculture as a whole since prewar. The mining and agricultural state of Nevada has had more firsts in per capita income rank than any other state since 1940. It topped the national list in the four years of 1947, 1946, 1943 and 1942. Last year New York, the nation's most riooulous state, was No. 1 in per capita income. |
